James R. Christenson

EDMOND —     James R. Christenson, 88, of Albuquerque, N.M., formerly of Edmond, Okla., died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012 after an extended illness.

    A native of Chicago, Ill., and former resident of St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Christenson was born Dec. 11, 1923, son of the late Elsie B. and Clemens W. Christenson.

    A decorated veteran of World War II, Mr. Christenson was a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps and served in the South Pacific. He received the Air Medal and other commendations.

    After his military service, Mr. Christenson attended Chicago Technical College, and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Machine Design. He worked as a draftsman for Trimount Instrument Co. in Chicago, and was promoted to chief engineer and plant superintendent. He worked as an aeronautical engineer for Ordnance Engineering Associates in Chicago and Denver, Colo., and was an engineering staff scientist in the rocket and space division of Emerson Electric in St. Louis.

    Upon retirement, Mr. Christenson served as a consultant for several engineering firms and was a volunteer for Wings of Hope in Chesterfield, Mo.

    He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Wolek Christenson.

    He is survived by sister, Kathleen Byers of Batavia, Ill.; son, Scott C. Christenson of Albuquerque; daughters Karen C. Graul of Columbia, Mo., and Kimberly C. Clarke of Richmond, Va.; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, several nieces and a nephew.

    Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond, Interment will at Memorial Park Cemetery in Edmond under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home.

    Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
