Alvis W. Grigsby

EDMOND —     Alvis William “Bill” Grigsby, 87, of Edmond, Okla., was born September 24, 1925, the son of Steven and Reta Grigsby of Davenport, Okla. He went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 at OK Heart Hospital. 

    Bill graduated from Davenport high school, joined the US Navy and served four years during WWII.  He married Mary Mitchell in 1947 and continued his education at UCO in Edmond, and OU in Norman. 

    Bill was a junior and senior high school teacher and coach in Clinton, Wynnewood, and Blackwell, Okla., and taught in Rockville, Md. until his retirement. He and his family returned to Edmond in 1990, and he served as a deacon at First Baptist Church in Edmond and president of the resident council at Quail Ridge Assisted Living, where he resided until his death.

    He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Mary Mitchell Grigsby and his parents.

    Bill is survived by his daughter, Maurita Kate Payne and husband, Rex of Guthrie; son Steven Grigsby of Edmond; grandson Thomas Payne and wife Joanie of Moore, Okla., granddaughters Krista Brash and husband Paul and Tiffany Grigsby and fiancé Chris Carrol of Edmond; great grandsons Logan Payne, Hunter and Dakota Brash; great granddaughters, Avery Payne, Riley and Presley Brash; brother Richard Grigsby and wife Patricia of Moore; sister Martha Hale and husband Curtis of Edmond; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his second wife, Bernice “Lucy” Grigsby of Oklahoma City, and a host of close friends.

    A formal visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Friday, November 30,  at Baggerley Funeral Home.

    Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, December 1 at First Baptist Church of Edmond with Pastor Jerry Miller presiding. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
