Considering all that moms do for us, 365 days a year, it seems to me that one day of recognition is not enough. So much of who we are and what we aspire to be finds its beginning with our mothers, and there’s no way one day can adequately thank them for all they give and sacrifice for their children.
In my life, I was blessed to grow up under the guidance of a wonderful mother and later marry a woman who would be an equally fantastic mom.
My mother, Audré Henry, was an inspiration to me throughout her life. She was a teacher by profession, but she also was an exceptional educator outside of the classroom. My mother taught me compassion and understanding. She taught me the importance of integrity and doing what’s right. She taught me how to laugh at myself. She also taught me that everyone can make a difference in his or her community.
As a lifelong teacher whose dedication to her students extended to their future and to the community at large, my mother’s example is a big part of why I entered public service. I always have believed that teachers are our greatest public servants.
So maybe it’s only fitting that I married a teacher who would prove to be an incredible mother. Kim worked for 10 years as an educator and has carried that passion over into her role as first lady. Still, she always has put our girls first. It was no surprise to me this year when she was recognized as an Honorary Mother of the Year by the Oklahoma Chapter of American Mothers Inc.
I know that not everyone is blessed with dependable and loving parents. Thousands of Oklahoma children are in foster care awaiting adoption, but fortunately more and more Oklahomans each year step up to provide love and a home to these deserving children. For others, organizations such as Big Brothers/Big Sisters provide a great way for anyone to make a difference in the life of a child who needs a mentor and a role model.
The importance of moms can’t be understated. For all that you’ve done throughout the years, and will continue to do, thank you, and Happy Mothers’ Day!
