McMahan shames state

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND The debacle of seeing another elected state official convicted this past week should be enough to galvanize voters to get to know candidates for these statewide offices a little better.

The conviction of State Auditor and Inspector Jeff McMahan is a particular black eye for Oklahoma simply because his position is that of the investigator who looks after the financial honesty of all other officials and government employees.

The office of state auditor should never be under any sort of question or cloud as to that person’s integrity and honesty.

Their leadership should be a beacon of best practices for all other officials and their employees to follow.

Instead, McMahan has turned it into a farce.

He and his wife Lori face sentencing each on a count of conspiracy and two counts of violating the Travel Act to commit bribery.

They could receive 25-year sentences.

McMahan handed over the reigns of his office in January to an assistant, but continued to draw his $109,000 annual salary up until his resignation Monday.

We believe McMahan should pay back the salary he has drawn for the past six months as an act of penance to voters who entrusted such an important public office to him.
