Lobbying for safety

The Edmond Sun

Several Edmond officials are visiting Washington, D.C., this week for their annual trip to lobby Congress on behalf of Edmond’s highest priorities.

This year the top priority is seeking federal funds to solve a potential problem at the Memorial Road and Broadway Extension where they meet up with Kelly Avenue and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad.

Edmond city officials have expressed the concern that when a train goes through that area, traffic potentially could back up the new fly loop onto Broadway Extension, causing a hazardous condition for all involved.

Edmond Mayor Patrice Douglas requested $20 million through Congresswoman Mary Fallin’s office earlier this year, and Fallin has indicated her support in the matter.

There are other local issues, but none that stand higher than this one when considering this important gateway into our city.

Getting any project through Congress is always a group effort. We’re hopeful that this group of local officials’ voices will be heard loud and clear. This is not only a transportation and safety issue, but also an economic one in looking at the amount of business traffic that travels in and out of Edmond along this corridor.

We wish our officials a safe and productive trip to our nation’s Capitol.
