EDMOND —
Washington Irving Elementary recently garnered its fifth model school site designation by Great Expectations.
With only 55 school sites earning the designation this past year, Washington Irving is truly defining excellence in the Edmond Public School District.
Schools are evaluated by the Great Expectations organization on citizenship, leadership and scholarship. The tenets of the teacher training group include always having high expectations of students, having positive attitudes in the classroom, recognizing that all children can learn, helping to build self-esteem, creating a climate of mutual respect and focusing on teacher knowledge and skill.
The program also offers 17 classroom practices that highlight critical thinking skills, modeling appropriate behaviors and integrated lessons with real-world experience aimed at the whole classroom.
As a Great Expectations Model School, Washington Irving, and for the third year, Edmond West Field Elementary, will be able to fly the GE flag, receive a certificate from the state superintendent of schools and receive a framed certificate from GE.
It takes a team effort by teachers and students alike at any school to achieve this type of recognition. If you know a teacher, administrator or student at either of these local schools, give them a pat on the back and a hearty congratulations.
