Jane Huffaker is a perfect example of it’s never too late to learn a new trick, hobby or sport.
“About a year ago, Mom decided that she wanted to learn how to ride,” said her daughter, Kristin Huffaker. “She began taking weekly riding lessons at Valentine Ranch, a stable in Edmond.”

    Edmond Memorial student Jessie Gerken entered a contest to rename Stride’s Nonstop Mint gum as part of a Distributive Education Clubs of America class project, and with the encouragement of her teacher, she entered and won.

  • Homeschooled student makes Eagle Scout
    Nicholas Massey, 14, a member of BSA Troop 11 in Edmond, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Nicholas is the son of Jeff and Sherri Massey of Edmond. Jeff is the Troop’s Scoutmaster.

    Edmond Light Horse 4-H Club members recently participated in the Oklahoma County Fair, which was at the Oklahoma State Fair Grounds.
    The Edmond Light Horse 4-H Club is a 4-H project club with a focus on the study of equine. The club, established in the 1970s, is seeing some second-generation members.

    Fifteen-year-old Carey McCachern received the highest honor in Boy Scouts during a ceremony at the Crossings Community Church Pavilion on Sunday.

  • Elementary receives fruit, vegetable grant
    Orvis Risner Elementery has received a Fresh Fruit and Vegetable grant through the State Department of Education for the 2009-10 school year.
    This grant is focused on promoting healthy eating habits and allowing students to try new fruits and vegetables. Three times a week every student receives a sample of a fruit or vegetable that is delivered to their classsroom.

    Tiny eyes lit up around the room Tuesday evening at Deer Creek Middle School as second- and third-grade students were being introduced for the first time to small scale violins, cellos, bass and violas.

  • Edmond semester exam exemptions increase
    In light of the unusual circumstances regarding H1N1 and the number of student absences that might result from contacting the virus, Edmond Public Schools has recommended revisions to the semester test exemption policy with the hope that both students and parents will understand the importance of keeping students who are ill at home, said Brenda Lyons, associate superintendent of secondary education.

  • North freshmen purchase memorial bench
    The North High School class of 2012 started work last spring to raise money for a memorial bench to be donated to the school’s new Freshman Academy. The class reached its goal of $1,600 before summer and the bench recently arrived at the academy.
