Educators Hall of Fame inducts UCO dean

The Oklahoma Educators Hall of Fame inducted Dr. John E. Clinton, dean of the College of Arts, Media and Design at the University of Central Oklahoma, and two other longtime state educators during a ceremony Aug. 16 at Oklahoma Christian University.

Clinton is a former Norman Public Schools director of Fine Arts and Norman High symphony orchestra conductor. The longtime Norman resident also has been executive director of the Oklahoma Center for Arts Education and Oklahoma A+ Schools.

Paul D. Hurst, who recently joined Putnam City Public Schools as superintendent, and the late Dr. William D. “Bill” Pennington, president of Murray State College in Tishomingo from 2004 until his death last fall, were also inducted.

The three inductees and many other Oklahoma educators were nominated to the Hall of Fame by the various Oklahoma chapters of Phi Delta Kappa International. Final selections were made by the Hall of Fame’s Board of Directors.

Edmond student chosen from 70,000 applicants to receive KFC scholarship

Nathaniel Beattie of Edmond is one of 100 students named to the third annual class of KFC Colonel’s Scholars. He was awarded this scholarship based on academic success in high school and financial need.

Beattie plans to use the scholarship beginning this fall while attending Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He aspires to earn his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in order to become a registered pharmacist.

Beattie believes being a part of a field that discovers cures and treatments for diseases would be a truly rewarding experience. He also wishes to obtain a minor in business administration, which will facilitate him in pursuing his dream of eventually owning his own pharmacy or research facility.

Local student receives full-tuition Camras Scholarship from Illinois Institute of Technology

Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) is pleased to announce that Ryan Tillman of Edmond, a recent graduate of Edmond Santa Fe High School, has been selected as a recipient of IIT’s prestigious Camras Scholarship. Tillman plans to study chemical engineering at IIT.

Camras Scholars are provided with a full tuition scholarship for four years of undergraduate education for all majors, with the exception of architecture majors who are awarded full tuition for their five-year program. Of all students who apply to IIT, less than 1% are selected to be Camras Scholars.

Local named to Darlington headmaster’s list

Darlington School in Rome, Ga., named Murat Varol of Edmond to Darlington’s Honor Roll for the third trimester.

Darlington School in Rome, Ga., is a coeducational, college preparatory day and boarding school established in 1905.

UCO-based Oklahoma A+ Schools plans for the future with help from Donald W. Reynolds Foundation Grant

The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation recently awarded through the University of Central Oklahoma Foundation a $100,000 grant to Oklahoma A+ Schools to complete an organizational and strategic plan for the Oklahoma A+ Schools network.

The funds will be used to generate a five-year strategic plan that will identify the educational community’s needs that can be best met by Oklahoma A+ while also identifying the mechanisms required to meet those needs.

Headquartered at UCO, Oklahoma A+ is a statewide network of schools that advances a quality, whole school experience to nurture the creativity in every learner.
