Edmond students to tour OSU

High school students from the Edmond area have been invited to tour Oklahoma State University in Stillwater on Sept. 24 and to learn about academic programs, housing opportunities, athletics and the campus, hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.

OSU buses will pick up and deliver the students from Wal-Mart at 1301 E. 2nd St.

The day will include free transportation to and from OSU-Stillwater; a campus tour, including residence halls; a student life showcase; a tour of the athletics’ facilities; academic break-out sessions; lunch and bus snacks.

“These are opportunities for prospective students and their parents to come to campus, meet with OSU faculty, staff and students, and become familiar with life at OSU,” said Karen Lucas, director of Admissions. “It’s a great time for students to see what it is like on a university campus and to get answers to all of their questions.”

Applications for admission, scholarship information and financial aid information will be available to any student who is interested in attending the university.

Students will board the orange OSU bus at 8:15 a.m. at Wal-Mart at 8:15 a.m. and the bus will leave promptly at 8:30 a.m. Students will leave Stillwater at 3 p.m. and will arrive back at the Wal-Mart at 4 p.m.

To reserve a space on the bus, students can fill out a reservation form online by visiting admissions.okstate.edu/events.html and will receive a confirmation e-mail from Undergraduate Admissions at the address provided. Limited spaces are available on the bus.

To join the tour, contact the Office of Undergraduate Admissions by calling (800) 233-5019, ext. 1, by e-mail at admissions@okstae.edu, or go the OSU Web site at admissions.okstate.edu.

UCO to put on stock market game

The University of Central Oklahoma’s Center for Economic Education and the Oklahoma Council on Economic Education (OCEE) will give fourth- through twelfth-graders a unique learning opportunity with the Oklahoma Stock Market Game Program this fall.

Through the program, student teams get a hypothetical amount of money to buy and sell stocks traded on the national exchanges, teaching them about economics, finance and the American economic system.

“Most students will be faced with making financial market related decisions sometime in their lives, so they need to learn good money habits that will empower them to take control of their finances,” said Laurie Burt, operation manager and stock market game coordinator for the OCEE.

“It’s very important for our young people to have the knowledge to make educated decisions about the stock market and how to make their money work for them.”

In the program, students buy, sell and research stock, as well as monitor their regional and statewide rankings via the Internet during a ten-week period.

The Oklahoma Stock Market Game Program correlates with state Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS) requirements, helping to develop skills in math, economics, language arts, social studies and business education, as well as technology, life skills and critical thinking.

Throughout the course of the program, students of all ability levels are provided comprehensive curriculum materials, both print and online, while building and maintaining a stock portfolio.

The competition will run from Sept.15 through Nov. 21.

No-cost team sponsorships are available on a first-come, first-serve basis thanks to the generosity of First Fidelity Bank and Capitol West Securities, Inc.

Participating teams will receive complimentary copies of The Oklahoman, sponsored by Capitol West Securities, Inc.
