Edmond resident receives scholarship for theological training

Maziel Dani of Edmond recently received a scholarship from the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship for the 2008-09 academic year. Dani attends Brite Divinity School in Fort Worth.

OC students give to hurricane victims

Oklahoma Christian University students collected $1,200 in chapel recently. This amount is being matched by a faculty member to buy water and supplies to finish filling up the trailer that is being sent to Houston hurricane victims.

Oklahoma Christian chapter takes top prize

Oklahoma Christian said recently that the university’s Tau Sigma Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta has won its 13th consecutive — and 14th overall — national Best Chapter Award. The chapter competed in Division 1, universities with 3,000 and fewer students, and in the Nels A. Cleven category, for universities that have won five or more Best Chapter Awards.

“We are extremely excited about our students’ continued outstanding performance in chapter activities,” said John Maple, the group’s sponsor and chairman of the department of history and political science. “The students deserve all the credit for this excellent achievement.”

Tau Sigma members presented their scholarship at both the Oklahoma Regional Conference and the National Conference, and took first and second in the American History-Undergraduate category at the Oklahoma Regional. They helped the department of history and political science host History Day, which is an academic competition for sixth- through 12th-graders, published a journal and engaged in a number of other activities.

The chapter also entered volume 16 of the Oklahoma Christian University Journal of Historical Studies in the Nash Journal Award competition. Volume 15 placed third last year. Results of that contest are expected in the near future.

Oklahoma City University announces tuition waiver for Methodist clergy’s children

Oklahoma City University will provide 100 percent of tuition costs for United Methodist Ministers and their families who are from the Oklahoma Annual Conference and the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference and under appointment by Bishop Robert E. Hayes Jr., of the Oklahoma Area of the United Methodist Church, and OCU President Tom McDaniel announced.

The tuition waiver will take effect for the fall 2009 semester and will be extended to the spouses and dependent children of ministers from these two conferences. Recipients must meet all unconditional admission requirements. Those attending can choose from more than 65 undergraduate majors at Methodist-affiliated OCU.

UCO hosts renowned author

Nationally acclaimed author and teacher Ron Clark will offer inspiring words and proven advice for educating children when he speaks at the University of Central Oklahoma on Oct. 23 in the Nigh University Center.

Clark will give two presentations: a 1:30-3:30 p.m. session geared towards educators and a 7-8:30 p.m. lecture for community members from all backgrounds who are interested in increasing children’s achievement in our schools.

Participants of each session will have the opportunity to ask Clark questions and have the author sign copies of his books.

Oklahoma Christian University receives $100,000 grant

The School of Engineering at Oklahoma Christian University is receiving a three-year grant from the National Science Foundation to develop curriculum that improves the retention of engineering students. This grant is part of a larger program that includes 15 diverse collaborating institutions that has been funded for a total of $2 million.
