Santa Fe Orchestra holds concert, dinner fundraiser Monday

The Santa Fe High School Orchestra will hold a concert and dinner on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Edmond Santa Fe High School Auditorium, which starts at 6:30 p.m., and the dinner at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $7 for adults and $3 for children, 10 and under.

Santa Fe forms booster club to promote orchestra

Orchestra Association of Stringed Instrument Supporters (OASIS) is the newly formed booster club which was formed to support students and encourage parent involvement. Christy Fine, Santa Fe High School Orchestra Director, will oversee operations. Officers of OASIS are: Ken Elliott, President; Stacy Sample, Vice-President; Margaret Doyal, Secretary, and Dana Elkins, Treasurer.

Deer Creek School District gathers HOA information

Deer Creek School District’s personnel director Lenis De Rieux said the district is gathering information on all of the Deer Creek Home Owners’ Association and their officers in order to better improve communication between the district and patrons. ECU student Lindsey Sargent performs for concert

Lindsey Sargent of Edmond played the euphonium during an Instrumental Ensembles Concert performed by East Cental University’s Flute, Clarinet and Brass Ensembles Oct. 30.

The Brass Ensemble performed “A Centennial Fanfare” by John Zdechlik, “Irish Tune from County Derry” by Percy Grainger, “Two Pieces” by William Brade, “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David Holsinger and “Gilliard Battaglia” by Samuel Scheidt.

The Brass Ensemble is directed by Frank Zugelder.

State to host school board candidate informational workshop

The Oklahoma State School Boards Association will host School Board Candidate Informational Workshops for anyone interested in running for their local school board.

The workshops are free one hour informational sessions designed to give the public a better understanding of school board service and eligibility requirements.

Bishop McGuinness students collect canned goods

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School set an Oklahoma high school record by collecting 58,857 pounds of canned goods for the Harvest Food Drive. The annual food drive is sponsored by the Oklahoma City Regional Food Bank and provides food to Oklahoma families that are in need of help and assistance. Bishop McGuinness has been involved in the Harvest Food Drive since 1988.

Members of Student Council organized the traditional can sculpture contest between the classes at school.

Students also competed by grade for number of cans collected. Winners were the sophomores with 12,171 pounds.

The Food Bank brought two semi-trailers. As McGuinness students formed an assembly line to move cans to the containers, Food Bank employees filled both trucks with crate after crate of canned goods, rice, beverages and other food staples.

“Service is our gospel value for the 2008-09 school year and our students have fully embraced this idea,” said Mr. Morton. “Once gain our seniors have led the way. From the recent completion of the Habitat House to the Canned Food Drive, their leadership has ensured the success of both projects.”

Heritage Hall presents cookbook

Heritage Hall is making its cookbook, “To Learn, To Lead ... To Serve,” available to those outside of the school community.

“To Serve” is a culmination of recipes from Heritage Hall friends and family from across the United States.

“Every penny of the sales goes directly to technology at Heritage Hall or, as we like to say, straight into the children’s pockets,” said Janet McLain with the Heritage Hall Student/Parent Association.

“‘To Serve’ was designed to be a book with qualities marketable to many culinary groups int he state of Oklahoma,” McLain said.

Bishop McGuinness presents Fine Arts Night

Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School will present Fine Arts Night at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 2, in the Petuskey Performing Arts Center Auditorium. A celebration of the works of the school’s Fine Arts students, visual arts and photography will be on display in the halls and a performance displaying the skills of the dancers, musicians and actors will also take place. Refreshments will be served after the performance, hosted by the Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO.)

Memorial’s BPA hosts carnival for Wheeler Elementary students

Edmond Memorial High School’s chapter of Business Professionals of America (BPA) completed a Community Action project making safer environment for Halloween trick or treaters. Members hosted a Fall Carnival at Wheeler Elementary in Oklahoma City on Oct. 30. with booths designed and run by EMHS students for the elementary students. The students raised more than 500 lbs. of candy for the carnival.

Area counselors attend ‘Magic in the Metroplex’

Counselors and college advisors from several Oklahoma cities visited four Texas colleges in late October during the “Magic in the Metroplex” program offered by Austin College (located just north of Dallas), Southern Methodist University (Dallas), Texas Christian University (Fort Worth), and University of Dallas (Dallas).

Counselors attended programs at each college and toured facilities to learn about the offerings of each school and better guide students making college choices.

Attendees along with the school at which they work with students include:

Ann Thompson, counselor, Deer Creek High School; Carol Doherty, counselor, Edmond Memorial High School; Joe Bronson, teacher, Edmond North High School; Deanna Fleck, counselor, Edmond Santa Fe High School; Brenda Burnett, college advisor, Oklahoma Christian Academy; and Sharon Jones, counselor, Oklahoma Christian Schools.
