Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence announces new board members

EDMOND — OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence, a statewide charitable organization that recognizes and encourages academic excellence in Oklahoma’s public schools, has announced the addition of 10 new members to its Board of Trustees.

Appointed to serve three-year terms are Janet Cunningham, president, Northwestern Oklahoma State University, Alva; Kathryn Turner, retired superintendent, Fletcher Public Schools, Blanchard; Susan Winchester, president, Research Institute for Economic Development, Chickasha; Darin Kent, Oklahoma City Market president, Regent Bank, Edmond; Shelly Lambertz, asset manager, Hamm Capital, Edmond; N. Georgeann Roye, attorney, Crowe & Dunlevy, Mustang; and Farooq Karim, vice president and senior director of design, REES Associates, Norman. New trustees from Oklahoma City are Jack H. Coleman, an investments agent and Mary Marks Jenkins, general counsel, Oklahoma City University.

Darin Kent of Edmond is the Oklahoma City Metro president of Regent Bank and is the 2013 chair of the Edmond Area Chamber of Commerce. Kent earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Missouri State University in Springfield and is an honors graduate of the Graduate School of Banking at Colorado.

He is a Leadership Edmond graduate and Oklahoma Bankers Association Leadership graduate. He serves on the OBA Commercial Lending School Board of Directors. Among his many community activities, Kent serves on the board of the Edmond Public Schools Foundation, is past chair of Youth Leadership Edmond and is active in Edmond Rotary Club. He has been honored as the Tayo Fichtl Edmond Young Professional of the Year.

Edmond resident Shelly Lambertz is an asset manager for Hamm Capital, a family investment and advisory firm based in Oklahoma City. In addition to overseeing investments and assisting in the management of private companies, Lambertz leads Hamm’s philanthropic efforts. A 1988 business management graduate of Oklahoma State University, Hamm has had a varied career, serving on the staffs of U.S. congressmen Mickey Edwards, Bob Michel and Frank Lucas. She later served as human resources director for Hamm and Phillips Service Co. of Enid and served six years as executive director of Enid’s YWCA. Among her civic affiliations, Lambertz currently serves on the advisory board of Harold Hamm Diabetes Center and is a member of the Oklahoma Academy.

“We are pleased to welcome these outstanding leaders to our Board of Trustees,” said Chairman David L. Boren, who founded the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence 28 years ago. “They each bring tremendous talents and a strong commitment to quality public education in Oklahoma, and we look forward to the many contributions they will bring to our foundation.”

One of the keys to the foundation’s success is the leadership of its 180 trustees — leaders in business, education and public service, who represent every region of the state and help promote the foundation’s mission and its programs.

Through its Academic Awards Program, the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence has presented more than $4 million in cash awards to honor outstanding public school students and educators. Through its Local Education Foundation Outreach Program, the foundation provides technical support, training and networking opportunities to local education foundations across the state.

Among its other initiatives, the Foundation for Excellence coordinates a program to send Oklahoma teachers to the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute each summer and provides subscriptions for schools to receive Colonial Williamsburg Electronic Field Trips. The award-winning field trips help students to experience 18th-century colonial life through live television broadcasts, website activities and direct access to Williamsburg historians.

In 2006, the foundation launched the David and Molly Boren Mentoring Initiative to promote the growth and establishment of quality youth mentoring programs throughout Oklahoma. The Foundation also administers Professional Development Grants for Teachers to attend national conferences and institutes, and partners with the national Fund for Teachers and the Tulsa Community Foundation to provide grants of up to $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for teams of teachers for self-designed summer professional development opportunities in locations around the world. Thanks to generous bridge funding from the national Fund for Teachers, 677 Oklahoma educators have received grants totaling $2.3 million since 2006.
