With a revised calendar for the 2012-13 school year, Deer Creek will be starting one-hour Late Start on Wednesdays today.
“This Late Start configuration will provide time for our teachers to participate regularly in activities designed to promote gains in student achievement,” Superintendent Sean McDaniel said previously.
While the students arrive one hour later on Wednesdays, the staff will be arriving at the regular time and spend one hour in teams working together. Bus pick-up and drop-off schedule will be one hour later.
This schedule will continue every Wednesday through April 3 for every K-12 grade student.
As part of the Professional Learning Community, a group of collaborative teams that share a common purpose, multiple groups of teachers collaborating across the district will be meeting during that one-hour time slot.
Teachers will be meeting in grade level teams (all third grade teachers for example) or content area teams (all math teachers) or vertical teams (fourth and fifth-grade teachers or ninth- and 10th-grade history teachers. Teachers will learn how to identify learning deficiencies and implement successful strategies. They will analyze data and have opportunities to make data-driven decisions about individual students, and will continually set goals for students, monitor successes and challenges and make necessary adjustments.
The end of the day will not change on Late Start Wednesdays. Students will be released at the same time as any other day of the week.
Data tracking and reporting will occur in areas such as standardized test scores, attendance, disciplinary referrals and participation, among others.
