Local educators explore Arkansas River

Melissa Corbet of Edmond joined more than 20 educators from across the state for a week-long field expedition exploring water conservation and other current issues affecting the Arkansas River.

These teachers were selected to take part in a professional development institute called “GeoTripping on the Arkansas River,” funded by the Oklahoma Geography Education Fund and hosted by the Oklahoma Alliance for Geographic Education, an educational outreach organization housed at the University of Oklahoma.

From June 7–14, 22 Oklahoma teachers explored the hydrologic, environmental and cultural issues impacting the Arkansas River.

Doug Hurt, assistant professor in the Department of History and Geography at the University of Central Oklahoma, joined the teachers as an institute leader.

Participants began their expedition at the University of Oklahoma in Norman and continued to the headwaters of the Arkansas River by way of Kaw Lake in Oklahoma; Garden City, Kansas; as well as Pueblo, Buena Vista and Leadville, Colo.

Participants had direct interactions with Army Corps of Engineers staff, conservation district managers and United States Geological Survey experts. Upon completion of the institute, participants created lesson plans and curriculum for classroom use.

“These teachers will go into the local communities to learn first hand about water’s relationship to other natural resources and its importance to the culture and environment of every landscape it touches,” said Gary Gress, OKAGE coordinator and institute director.

“Our goal is to give our participants new insight in how to integrate geography and environmental education into their curriculum, so that they can translate that back to their students and other educators.”
