EDMOND — Deer Creek Public School District’s Barb Stephens was chosen to represent the district as the 2013 Teacher of the Year.

Stephens, a kindergarten teacher at Deer Creek Elementary School, was chosen by her peers to represent the district in the Oklahoma Teacher of the Year selection process.

“Last year was my first year at Deer Creek Elementary, and I loved it,” Stephens said. “For six years I’ve been teaching preschool at a private preschool in Edmond, and prior to that I taught second grade in the Edmond schools. I have my master’s degree in elementary education, and I’m certified in early childhood education.”

As Stephens begins her 10th year in education, she will be moving up to teach first grade.

Stephens said she and her husband both grew up in Nebraska, but they have lived throughout the Midwest.

“We arrived in Edmond in 1997 and have felt so fortunate to be in such a family oriented community. Our oldest daughter is a nurse at Children’s Hospital, and our son will be a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma this fall. We all love college football in our family and are anxiously anticipating the upcoming season.”

Stephens said in her free time she enjoys gardening, cooking, reading, spending time with family and friends, and walking the family’s cocker spaniel, Beau.

“We value our  church home and enjoy spending time there as well,” Stephens said.

“I believe that the children of today are truly our future. As a teacher it is my job to instill in my students a love of learning, and a curiosity about our world. Working together with you, your child’s first and best teacher, we can achieve great success.”

Other teachers representing their schools as the 2013 Teacher of the Year include: Grace Pierson, Deer Creek High School; Sydney Barton, Deer Creek Middle School; Meredith Maynerik, Deer Creek Intermediate School; Brenda Bogner, Grove Valley Elementary School; Erin Bryan, Prairie Vale Elementary School; and Erika Rowell, Rose Union Elementary School.
