Special to The Sun

OKLA. CITY — Citizens Caring for Children will have a one-day Back to School shopping event from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on July 20 for school-aged children in foster care living in Oklahoma, Canadian, Cleveland, Grady, Lincoln, Logan and Pottawatomie counties. The event will take place at the Oklahoma State Fair in the Carriage Hall.

Each child will receive a backpack and school supplies from the Junior League of Oklahoma City and a new outfit (top, bottom, shoes, socks and underwear) from CCC. This year, CCC has expanded its Back to School event to offer even more services for families. Shoppers can receive free dental and vision exams, haircuts, immunizations and be treated to snow cones, pizza from Little Caesars and special guest appearances by the Oklahoma City Thunder Girls and Oklahoma City Barons Ice Girls. Vendors from Sunbeam Family Services and Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth will be on hand to pass out literature.

With an anticipated 800 school-aged children in foster care expected to attend, CCC is seeking 300 volunteers to help with setup, check in, serve as personal shoppers and more. Volunteer shifts are available for 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. July 17 and July 18 and day of event from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 20. Those interested in signing up for a shift should visit www.cccokc.org or contact Hillary Winn, program director, at hwinn@cccokc.org.

Back to School is sponsored by The Junior League of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma State Fair, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Oklahoma Dental Foundation, Prevent Blindness Oklahoma, Little Caesars, Dental Depot, Kona Ice, Central State Hair Academy, Hair Rage 2 Salon and Heritage College.

Currently, more than 10,500 children and young adults are living in Oklahoma’s foster care system. Citizens Caring for Children’s mission is to meet the unique needs of these children and young adults through our Resource Center and Mentor programs.
