Bishop McGuinness Alumni Association hosts 4th annual Trivia Night

Members of the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School Alumni Association will kick off the school year by hosting the fourth annual Trivia Night on Aug. 22 in the Bishop McGuinness Commons area. All proceeds benefit the Alumni Association Scholarship Fund.

More than 300 people are expected to attend the Peace, Love and Happiness themed Trivia Night. Committee Chairperson is Lisa Corsoro Rooks, Class of 1989, and master of ceremonies is local newscaster Angela Buckelew, a 1986 McGuinness graduate.

Registration begins at 6 p.m.. and questions begin at 7 p.m. Tables of 10 will compete against each other during eight rounds of questions with 10 questions per round. The winning table receives preferred seating at next year’s event plus the shillelagh trophy that is passed on to each winner year to year.

Tickets are $10 per person or $100 a table. Reservations are required. Food and beverage tickets are $1 each. Purchase them with your table reservation to avoid the wait in line.

Memorial kicks off fall sports season

Bulldog Bash 2009 will kick off the fall sports season at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 15. The Memorial Bulldog football team will host various fall teams, squads, as well as the Memorial marching band and booster club to kick off the Bulldog school spirit.

Each organization will sell various items to benefit their various teams and squads. The event will include a burger cookout and more. Fall sporting teams will be introduced at 6:45 with the annual Maroon and Gray scrimmage beginning at 7:15 p.m. Everyone is welcome.



RIF and Macy’s partner to raise funds for children’s literacy

Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) and Macy’s have teamed up to launch Book A Brighter Future, a national partnership to raise awareness and support of children’s literacy. The Book A Brighter Future campaign is an annual promotion held at Macy’s stores during the back-to-school season to help raise money for local RIF programs, and to provide reading resources to the children who need them most.

This campaign provides an opportunity for Macy’s customers to join the effort and have an impact on literacy in their community. Through Aug. 31, Macy’s customers can give $3 and receive a coupon for $10 off a $50 purchase at any Macy’s store nationwide. Macy’s will donate 100 percent of every $3 to RIF.

For every $3 donated, $1 will support local RIF programs; $1 will support RIF’s Multicultural Literacy Campaign and $1 will provide reading resources to millions of underserved children across the country. “Thanks to this program, Buchanan Elementary School is able to provide children with free books,” said Pamela Hoppers, spokeswoman for the Oklahoma RIF partner.

Carol H. Rasco, RIF President and CEO said, “Nearly two-thirds of low-income families do not own any books for their children. This campaign with Macy’s allows RIF to provide literacy resources to the children at greatest risk for developing reading difficulties.”

Since 2004, Macy’s and RIF have raised more than $7 million through the in-store promotion, providing more than 3 million books to 1 million children. Macy’s also supports RIF’s Multicultural Literacy Campaign, a multi-year effort to promote and support early childhood literacy in African American, Hispanic, and American Indian communities.



Casady School names Peter Huestis as new Upper Division director

Casady School announced July 30 the appointment of Peter Huestis as its new Upper Division director. A native Canadian, Peter Huestis comes to Casady from Forsyth Country Day School (FCDS) in Lewisville, N.C., a pre-kindergarten through 12th grade independent school with more than 1,000 students.

In his new role, Huestis will oversee the day-to-day operations of the school’s Upper Division, which houses about 300 students in grades nine through 12.

“Mr. Huestis will deepen faculty’s learning styles and learning on how to help students balance academics, arts and athletics,” Chris Bright, Casady Headmaster, said. ”Overall, he will bring faculty and Casady together on shared aims.”

Dedicated to the idea that every student achieves success, Huestis created a program at FCDS to help those with language-based learning differences. Named “Multisensory Academy of Practitioners at Forsyth Country Day School” or MAPS, the program infuses the school’s college preparatory curriculum with multisensory methodologies.

“The rigor of any academic program must meet the needs of the students now and prepare them for life as successful college students and effective members of an increasingly global marketplace,” Huestis said.

Huestis’ experience also includes work with both the Miami Heat and Boston Celtics basketball teams as guest relations agent and free agent camp coach, respectively. He earned a Master’s degree in sports management from Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla., and a Bachelor’s degree in history from Bishop’s University in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada.



Auditions set for Read Across America tour

Creative Spirit Acting Academy in conjunction with the Oklahoma Education Association is proud to announce auditions for its 2009-2010 Read Across America Educational Tour Groups. From the people who brought you “Seuss Troupe” comestwo fun and exciting new tours.
