Bulldog Band kicks off 2009-10 season

Edmond Memorial High School band members marched in the official opening of the fall sports season at the annual “Bulldog Bash” last Saturday. The Big Bad Bulldog Band, 200 members strong, marched into the Bulldog stadium to fire up the packed house.

As is their tradition, the band begins their march at the west side of the campus moving in formation towards the east. Silence, except the steady beat of the drums, accompanies them into the stadium. Once inside, the band plays to the crowd of students, athletes and parents until the introductions of the coaches and teams are made. The event wrapped up with a Bulldog varsity football scrimmage.

The “Bash” is the first of a series of appearances that the Memorial High School marching band will make during the fall of 2009. In addition to the regular football games, the band will compete in September at the Putnam City Marching Classic followed by the Broken Arrow Invitational. In October, the Bulldog Band will defend their superior ratings at the Oklahoma State Regional Competition held in Lawton.

The marching season will wrap up with the Oklahoma Band Masters Association competition, in which the Bulldogs currently hold the third place title.

“Band isn’t just a class, it’s a lifestyle,” said Meghan Sheehan, a senior flutist.

Students average 15-28 hours of practice a week from the end of July through the beginning of November.

“We strive for perfection through repetition,” Sheehan said. “We just keep doing it over and over until it’s better than right.”

    Three live goats will be on hand to kick off the 8:15 a.m. assembly for Central Middle School’s Fall Fundraiser on Thursday.
    The goats will be visiting from Boys Ranch Town as a reminder to the students that the money they raise will be used to purchase goats and to provide a well for an impoverished community.

  • Edmond area schools’ ACT scores are tops

    Three of four Edmond area schools appeared on the list of the eight Oklahoma high schools posting the highest average ACT composite score for 2010, and three of the four tested the largest student populations.
    “About three out of four students in the Class of 2010 took the ACT, which means the great majority of Oklahoma high school seniors are interested in attending college,” said State Superintendent Sandy Garrett.

    Approximately 430 people turned out for the fifth annual Bishop McGuinness Clancy’s Challenge “Go Green” Trivia Night on  Aug. 21 in the McGuinness Commons. The event was hosted by the BMCHS Alumni Association but open to anyone. Committee Chairperson was Lisa Corsoro Rooks ’89 and Master of Ceremonies was local newscaster Meg Alexander, of KFOR News.
