UCO invites toy donations for El Reno child center

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma invites the community to donate toys for the Canadian Valley Technology Center Child Development Center in El Reno after the May 31 tornado destroyed the facility.

Toys can be dropped off at the visitor’s desk just inside the main entrance on the east side of the Nigh University Center from 8 a.m. to noon today through Sunday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and July 8. The university is closed July 4-5 for the Independence Day holiday.

The following items are needed in gently used or new condition: durable small toy cars, books, balls, wooden puzzles and small shovels and buckets. Infant toys, dolls, dramatic play/dress-up items, board games, bubbles, sidewalk chalk and art supplies such as markers, crayons and construction paper can only be accepted in brand new condition.

Kaye Sears, program coordinator for Central’s Human Environmental Sciences program, is leading the toy collection effort for the center.

“Our family life education students have been concerned about finding ways to help the community of Moore, El Reno and others affected by the tornadoes,” Sears said. “When we realized that the Canadian Valley Technology Center Child Development program was damaged beyond repair, we knew this was how we could help.”

Those coming to campus to drop off donated items may temporarily park under the portico in front of the Nigh University Center main entrance.
