Edmond students attend OSSM math workshops

OKLA. CITY — Mathematics and M&Ms, Dixie cup-and-pencil catapults and pecking chickens intrigued nearly a dozen Edmond students recently at the annual Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics One-Day Middle School Summer Math Workshops in Oklahoma City.

Joshua Brock, Alex Chao, Anka Hu, Arthur Hu, Symon Ma, Amanda Pan, Max Tjauw, Vyas Vankataraman, Daniel Yao and Aaron Zou were among 161 motivated students from 70 schools across the state who attended the intensive sessions taught by OSSM mathematics professors and Oklahoma City teachers. Ten instructors challenged and entertained participants with complex problems, models, puzzles, games and tips for solving contest math problems.

Many of the students were introduced to concepts they had never experienced. Therefore, the majority of curious learners opted to continue improving their math skills by attending multiple workshop sessions, each one unique in focus and content. Students were presented problems from previous MATHCOUNTS, Oklahoma Math League , American Mathematics Competition and the OSSM Oklahoma Middle School Math Contest competitions.

According to Dan Vossen, director of the workshops and an assistant in the OSSM Admissions Department, “These students were particularly ready to engage in math logic problems.

“They especially enjoyed the challenges of classroom competitions and demonstrating their understanding of newly acquired mathematics skills. The professors continually praised the students for their enthusiasm, excellent progress and preparation.”

The workshops are provided free-of-charge and lunch is included in the five-hour sessions. Students are rewarded with new friendships, problem-solving skills and an improved math vocabulary, Vossen said.

He added that plans for a more extensive workshop program next summer are under way. Middle school students who are interested in future workshops or competing in the 2013 OSSM Middle School Math Contest should visit the OSSM website www.ossm.edu for more information.
