Special to The Sun
Two Edmond Boy Scouts recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. The Scouts are Conner Stanley Blatt and Austin Matthew Sykora.
Conner, 16, was awarded his Eagle Scout rank on Nov. 20. Conner is a member of Troop 331, chartered by St. Monica Catholic Church in Edmond. His Eagle Scout service project was improving the campus by the Fine Arts entrance of Edmond North High School. The area was prone to seasonal flooding and was difficult for students, teachers and patrons to cross to adjoining parking/passenger pickup areas. The project involved re-grading the area for drainage, providing two new sidewalks, laying 6,000 square feet of sod, planting three shade trees and installing a sitting area.
Conner will be receiving St. Monica’s Faithful Perseverance Award for joining Cub Scout Pack 331 as a Tiger Cub and completing his path to Eagle Scout with Troop 331. Conner held several leadership positions with the troop including Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol leader, scribe, troop guide, instructor and Den Chief. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow, and he also received the Eagle District Outstanding Den Chief Award in 2009. Conner attended camps at Slippery Falls in Oklahoma, Camp Alexander in Colorado and Camp Gorham in New Mexico. He especially enjoyed his High Adventure trek at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico.
He is a violinist of the Edmond North Symphony Orchestra, plays offensive line for the Edmond North varsity football team and is a member of National Honor Society. Conner is an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church where he is a musician for Mass, plays violin for the Youth Orchestra and has been an Altar Server. He is currently planning on attending Oklahoma State University to study engineering.
Conner is a junior at Edmond North High School and the son of Tony and Julie Blatt.
Austin Sykora, 17, was awarded his Eagle Scout rank on Dec. 18. He is a member of Troop 331 chartered by St. Monica Catholic Church in Edmond. His Eagle Scout service project was redesigning a section of the multi-use trail at Arcadia Lake that had erosion and flooding issues causing problems for the many hikers and mountain-bikers that use the trails and was improved with alternate elevation and drainage to divert the water flow away from the trail.
Austin will be receiving St. Monica’s Faithful Perseverance Award, where he joined Cub Scout Pack 33 as a Tiger Cub and completed his path to Eagle with Troop 331, including leadership positions of patrol leader, chaplain’s aide, historian, librarian, and Order of the Arrow representative. He is a Brotherhood member of the Order of the Arrow and active in the University of Oklahoma ushering program. He attended Scout camps at Slippery Falls in Oklahoma and Camp Alexander in Colorado and has always enjoyed the troop’s High Adventure activities, including two treks at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, with one as Crew Leader, and canoed the Boundary Waters along the Minnesota/Canadian border.
He is a violinist in the Edmond North Orchestra. He is an active member of St. Monica Catholic Church where he is an Alter Server, plays in the Youth Orchestra, and volunteers on the mowing/landscape team. Austin also plays soccer for ESC United, previously ESC Arsenal, and utilizes the many skills he learned in Scouting as a Red Cross certified lifeguard in Edmond.
Austin is a junior at Edmond North High School and is the son of Rick and Dana Sykora.
