EDMOND —
It is all about fun and learning at Santa Fe High School as the Robolobos, Santa Fe’s Robotics Team, plan their fall Sciencing On Saturday (S.O.S.) session for Nov. 10.
Open registration will take place from 4-7 p.m. Thursday in the Santa Fe High School front lobby.
With morning sessions from 9-11:30 a.m. and afternoon sessions from 1-3:30 p.m., students in first through fifth grades will be able to learn about science in an atmosphere filled with action-packed fun. Each session is $15.
Sessions for first- and second-graders include: Wipe Out!, a session on weather and natural disasters, and Geology Rocks!, a study of the earth, rocks and erosion.
Third- and fourth-graders will be attending: What a Drag..., a session on friction and drag, and London Bridge Isn’t Falling Down, a look how to make strong structures.
Fifth-graders will learn about Physics, Phorces, and Phun, as they view experiments involving Newton’s three laws.
Randy Blackwood and his wife Cheri Blackwood are co-sponsors.
Randy, a math teacher, and his wife Cheri, a science teacher, have been coaches for the Robolobos team for the past six years. In 2011 the team won the Engineering Inspiration award.
“This award is given to teams that help further engineering within their schools as well as other schools,” Randy said. “Sciencing on Saturday is what we were recognized for.”
Robotics team members hope to tutor more than 100 other students, and the money raised helps fund the Robotics Club and their endeavors.
“Students develop critical thinking skills and see that there are multiple solutions,” Blackwood said. “Cheri and I are so excited to get to work with these kids. It gives them the opportunity to stretch their minds and build confidence by encouraging them to take on challenges they might originally think are beyond them.”

Kindergartners say they are ‘Ready for first grade’
