Food Bank gives free summer meals for children

EDMOND — For thousands of children, the end of school means three long months of wondering whether or not they will have enough food to eat. Fortunately, children 18 and under can get a nutritious lunch, and/or snack through the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma’s Summer Feeding program at selected sites from June 3 through July 27.

“One in four children in Oklahoma struggles with hunger every day,” said Rodney Bivens, executive director of the Regional Food Bank. “No child should have to worry where their next meal will come from. This program ensures that children will receive adequate nutrition during the summer months when school meals are not available.”

Meals will be provided to all children age 18 and younger, without charge. The Regional Food Bank will provide free summer meals at the following sites and times in the Edmond area:

• Edmond YMCA, operating June 3 through July 31, at 1220 S. Rankin in Edmond. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and snack time is 4:30-5:30 p.m.

• Ambassador Courts Housing is operating June 3 through July 26, at 800 S.E. 15th St. in Oklahoma City.  The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 2:15 to 2:45 p.m. and the location will be closed July 5.

• Boys and Girls Club-Memorial Park, operating June 3 through July 31, at 3535 N. Western Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from noon to 1:30 p.m. and breakfast is served from 8:30-9:30 a.m.

• Boys and Girls Club-Salvation Army, operating June 3 through July 26, at 2808 S.E. 44th in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from noon-1 p.m. and snack time is from 3-3:45 p.m. The location will be closed July 5.

• Capitol Hill Church of Christ, operating June 3 through July 31, at 2801 S. Robinson Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and snacks are served from 1:30-2 p.m. The location will be closed on June 20 and 27 and July 3, 11, 18 and 25.

• Downtown YMCA, operating June 3 through July 31, located at 1 N.W. Fourth St. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and snack time is from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

• Emery’s Extravaganza, operating June 3 through July 31, at 5700 N. Kelly Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and snack is from 3-4:45 p.m. The location will be closed July 12, 19 and 26.

• Rockwell YMCA, operating June 3 through July 31, at 8300 Glade Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Thursday. Lunch is from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and snack time is from 2:30-3 p.m.

• North Side YMCA, operating June 3 through July 31, at 10000 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Thursday. Lunch is from noon-1 p.m. and snacks are served from 3-4 p.m. The location will be closed on June 21 and 28 and July 5.

• Urban League of Greater OKC, operating June 3 through July 26, at 3900 N. Martin Luther King Blvd. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from noon to 1 p.m. and snack is from 3:30-4 p.m. The location is closed July 5.

• Freedom School, operating June 17 through July 24, at 1901 Springlake Dr. in Oklahoma City. Lunch is from 12 to 12:30 p.m. and snack is from 2:30 to 2:45 p.m.

• McKinley Park Center, operating June 3 to July 31, at 1300 N. McKinley Ave. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 1-2 p.m. and snack is served from 3-3:30 p.m.

• Melrose Community Center, operating June 3 through July 31, at 7800 Melrose Lane in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 1-2 p.m. and snack is served 3 to 3:30.

• Metro Tech Academy, operating June 3 through July 24, located at 1901 Springlake Dr. in Oklahoma City. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and snack is served from 2:30 to 2:45 p.m.  The location is closed on July 5.

• Minnis Community Center, operating June 3 through July 31, located at 12520 N.E. 36th St. in Spencer. The site is open Monday through Friday. Lunch is from 12 to 1 p.m. and snack is served from 2:30 to 3 p.m.

Last summer, the Regional Food Bank provided more than 166,000 meals at 63 sites to children through the Summer Feeding program, which includes the federal Summer Food Service Program, and a private Feeding Our Future program sponsored by Sodexo.
