Special to The Sun
Fifty-two upcoming high school seniors from across the state graduated from Youth Leadership Oklahoma’s Class XIII on June 14 at the Governor’s Mansion in Oklahoma City.
A class is selected each year through a competitive process based on proven leadership, geographic, ethnic and cultural diversity. Selected students participate in a week-long trip across the state of Oklahoma where they learn about Oklahoma’s history, culture, issues and leaders where they begin to develop a greater understanding and appreciation for our state. YLOK was created in 2001 with the mission to develop in young leaders a hope, pride and a responsibility for Oklahoma’s future. More than 650 students have participated in this one of a kind program. In 2008 Leadership Oklahoma was awarded the 2008 Innovator Award from the Southern Growth Policies Board. Leadership Oklahoma’s CEO is Dr. Ann Ackerman and the Youth Director for Leadership Oklahoma is Lee Anne Stone.
The week-long program began in Oklahoma City at the Gaylord Pickens Oklahoma Heritage Museum and concluded at the Phillips Pavilion at the Governor’s Mansion.
Other locations visited throughout the week included Norman, Lawton, Sulphur, Tulsa, Stillwater and Enid. At each location, YLOK Class XIII learned about Oklahoma’s resources, issues and treasures, met with state leaders and further developed their own leadership skills.
