EDMOND — Third-graders across the Edmond Public Schools district took a hands-on approach this week to learning about Oklahoma's history by re-enacting the 1889 Land Run that opened Oklahoma Territory to settlement. Tuesday was the 125th anniversary of that fateful rush for land, including the beginnings of Edmond. About 150 settlers came to Edmond by nightfall of April 22, 1889. Students at John Ross Elementary, pictured above, joined other third graders making their own land runs at Chisholm Elementary, Clegern Elementary, Orvis Risner Elementary and Northern Hills Elementary. Frontier Elementary had to postpone its Land Run this week due to rainy weather on Monday.
