EDMOND — Guthrie resident completes program at Vatterott College
Sandra Stark of Guthrie has earned a diploma in the Medical Office Assistant program at Vatterott College in Oklahoma City.
Vatterott College is a private career college offering specialized, technology -focused, hands-on training programs in the fastest growing industries. The Oklahoma City campus offers programs focused on the information technology, health-care and technical trade industries.

High School Students Attend SWOSU Science and Math Academy
Twenty high school juniors and seniors attended the Science and Mathematics Academy June 2-13 at Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford.
The academy, funded by SWOSU and a grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, was for high ability juniors and seniors. The purpose of the academy is to expose students to the close relationship between science, mathematics, technology and society. And, the program is designed to motivate the participants to pursue higher education and careers in science, mathematics and technology.
During the first part of the academy, the students studied academic science units offered in biology, chemistry, geology and space science, health, physics, mathematics and computer science.
The students also participated in an interdisciplinary problem-solving unit directed by SWOSU scientists.
Additional enrichment activities were scheduled throughout the academy.

OCS sells bricks
Oklahoma Christian School is selling bricks to pave the Alumni Avenue, the walkway between the student center and the football field. This path is to commemorate the achievements and attendance of our past, present and future graduates.
Bricks are sold for a minimum donation amount. Additional donations will be used to complete the whole brick path, with a total cost of $13,000, and if possible, more capital improvements on the OCS Campus.
Two brick sizes are available. The 4 x 8 “Class of” Alumni Brick, with a suggested donation beginning at $35, and the 12 x 12 Accolade Brick, with a suggested donation beginning at $125.
Bricks are intended to commemorate current OCS students and graduates.

Angela Dormiani awarded fellowship
Edmond resident Angela A. Dormiani, a teacher at ASTEC Charter High School in Oklahoma City, has been awarded a James Madison Fellowship by the James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation of Washington, D.C., in its 17th annual fellowship competition. A total of 58 fellowships were awarded in 2008.
James Madison Fellowships support further study of American history by college graduates who aspire to become teachers of American history, American government, and social studies in the nation’s secondary schools, as well as by experienced secondary school teachers of the same subject.
Named in honor of the fourth president of the United States and acknowledged “Father of the Constitution and Bill of Rights,” the fellowship will fund up to $24,000 of Dormiani’s course of study toward a master’s degree. That program must include a concentration of courses on the history and principles of the United States Constitution.
Dormiani was selected for a James Madison Fellowship in competition with applicants from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the nation’s island and trust territories.

Bishop McGuinness graduate named Distinguished Alumnus
Rear Admiral Greg Slavonic, U.S. Navy retired and a member of the Class of 1967, has been named by the Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School Alumni Association as the recipient of the 2008 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
Upon graduation from Bishop McGuinness, Slavonic attended Oklahoma State University and graduated in 1971 with a degree in journalism and broadcasting.
A former journalism adjunct professor at the University of Central Oklahoma, Slavonic enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served for 34 years in the Navy/Navy Reserve raising Seaman Recruit to Rear Admiral, the fourth highest ranking officer in the Navy. Eleven of his 34 years were spent in active duty.
He also has been an account executive for KFOR-TV, general manager of the Oklahoma Gazette, advertising director for the Journal Record and account executive for The Daily and Sunday Oklahoman. He is currently the executive director of the Jim Thorpe Association.
Slavonic is co-chairman of the USS Oklahoma Memorial Committee.
