Show features students getting head start on college

Beginning Aug. 24 Oklahoma Horizon, a weekly show produced by the Oklahoma Department of Career and Technology Education, will begin airing a story on Oklahoma students earning college credit at technology centers.

The segment will feature several students such as Branton Hutchison, enrolled at Metro Technology Centers in Oklahoma City, whose goal is to be the first one to go to college in his family. Karen Lara, of Lexington, who earned college credit at Mid-America Technology Center, Wayne, and is planning to earn an architectural degree at the University of Oklahoma also will be featured.

Higher Education and CareerTech have partnered to offer high school and adult students the opportunity to earn college credit at technology centers through Cooperative Alliance Agreements. From fall 2007 to spring 2008, 4,456 high school and 4,746 adult student enrollments earned 78,592 hours of college credit through the Alliances.

High school students who live in a technology center district are not charged tuition. Students with a 2.5 grade point average, 15 PLAN ACT score or 19 ACT score are eligible. Students pay an academic service fee of $8 per credit hour. Adult students pay the regular tuition at the technology center, which is considerably less than college tuition, and the $8 per credit hour academic service fee.

“Alliances create an extremely affordable way for students to earn college credit while they complete valuable courses in their fields and prepare for further education and careers,” said Phil Berkenbile, state director of Oklahoma’s CareerTech. “We have had high school students complete associate degrees and high school requirements simultaneously.”

Local resident among recent Harding University graduates

Tara Knight of Edmond was among the nearly 250 graduates who received diplomas in commencement exercises at Harding University July 26. Majoring in English, Knight received the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Kayla Shavers named to Dean’s List

Kayla Shavers of Edmond has been named to the Dean’s List for the winter quarter at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind.

Shavers is working on her Mechanical Engineering degree.

Local residents participates in Harding Honors Symposium

Stephen Brown, Daniel Burnett, Julie Chambers, David Griffin, Derek Laxton and Emilie McClanahan, all of Edmond are getting a head start on their first year of college.

All six students, who will be high school seniors this fall, earned three hours of university credit this summer by participating in Harding University’s Honors Symposium, a two-week academic program.

The content of the sumposium is designed to appeal to students of both the humanities and the sciences.

Admission to the symposium is treated on an individual basis, with special consideration given to grade point average, a score from any nationally standardized teest and a reference letter.

Vanderbilt University names local students to Dean’s List for spring 2008 semester

Javina Shenell Smith and Randy Lee Smith have both been named to the Spring 2008 Dean’s List for the College of Arts and Science and the School of Engineering respectively at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.

Javina is the daughter of Jared Driver of Nashville, Tenn., and Randy is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy L. Smith of Edmond.

To qualify for the Dean’s List students must receive grades equivalent to a 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for the semester.

Missouri State confers 599 degrees during summer commencement

Amanda L. Burleson of Edmond received her Master of Science in Education degree at Missouri State University Aug. 1.

Otterbein College names Kolby Kindle to Dean’s List

Kolby E. Kindle has been named to the Dean’s List at Otterbein College for the 2008 Spring quarter.

Kindle is the child of Eldridge and Theresa Kindle of Edmond.
