EDMOND — Nicholas Massey, 14, a member of BSA Troop 11 in Edmond, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Nicholas is the son of Jeff and Sherri Massey of Edmond. Jeff is the Troop’s Scoutmaster.
For his Eagle Scout service project, Nicholas planned and constructed four wood and metal benches for Waterloo Road Baptist Church’s new playground. He raised $900 from individual contributions. After project expenses, he donated more than $300 to the church’s building fund. The project involved 175 hours of planning and work hours, including the supervision of 15 volunteers.
Nicholas joined Tiger Cubs in 2001, when he was 6 years old. Even though he was only 6, Nicholas said, “I thought it looked like fun.”
Nicholas said scouting has helped him mature and also helped him learn how to motivate other boys. “I have learned leadership skills and how to work with different types of people,” Nicholas said.
On a high adventure trip to New Mexico in May, he experienced Class 4 white water rafting and said it was the most exciting scouting experience he ever had.
“I would have to say the white water trip to New Mexico was the greatest scouting experience that I have had,” Nicholas said. “It was challenging and a lot of fun.”
He has earned 42 merit badges and is currently working on his Eagle Palms.
Nicholas has served as librarian, historian, assistant patrol leader, patrol leader and assistant senior patrol leader. He is now the troop’s senior patrol leader.
Nicholas is homeschooled and is in the eighth grade. He is a member of the Excel co-op. He enjoys fencing and is an avid reader, especially of science fiction and history books.
A member of Waterloo Road Baptist Church, Nicholas is active in the youth program and works on the volunteer technology team. As a member of his church’s Awana program, he earned the program’s two highest awards for achievement. He is a recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Gold award and has done service work for Free to Live, The Hope Center, Lake Arcadia and The Food Bank.
Nicholas was honored in a Court of Honor ceremony on Oct. 3 at his church.
Troop 11, which was organized and is led by homeschool families, meets twice a month at Waterloo Road Baptist Church. Troop 11 has four Eagle Scouts being recognized.
First-graders can join Tiger Cubs. Cub Scouts is for boys ages 7-11. Boys ages 11-18 participate in Boy Scouts.

Award ceremony honors 2 local youth
Oklahoma’s top two youth volunteers of 2013, Perrin Duncan, 18, of Edmond and Mason Harvey, 13, of Guthrie, were honored in the nation’s capital recently for their outstanding volunteer service during the 18th annual presentation of The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Perrin and Mason — along with 100 other top youth volunteers from across the country — each received $1,000 awards and personal congratulations from Academy Award-winning actor Kevin Spacey and Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix at an award ceremony and gala dinner reception at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History.

Fourth- through seventh-grade students at St. Mary’s Episcopal School were expediting their effort this week to make as many “prayer squares” as possible before Friday — the last day of school — for tornado victims.

OETA broadcasts academic awards banquet
Five outstanding Oklahoma educators and 100 of the state’s top public high school seniors will be recognized when OETA premieres its statewide broadcast of the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence 27th Academic Awards Banquet at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author Thomas Friedman, who served as keynote speaker for the banquet, also will be featured on the program. The broadcast will air on OETA Channel 13 in Oklahoma City and Channel 11 in Tulsa. Subsequent broadcasts will be shown on OETA’s OKLA digital channel. Schools lose teachers to retirement
St. Mary’s Episcopal School will be saying good-bye to Headmaster Nancy Hetherington. Hetherington will be leaving after serving the school, which contains grades kindergarten through eighth-grade for the past 30 years. Pamela Docktor will begin next school year as headmaster.
Connie Westof and Billye Palmer also will be retiring from St. Mary’s School. Westof has been in education for 30 years with the last 23 years at St. Mary’s. Palmer also has been teaching for 30 years with the past 23 years at St. Mary’s.
Deer Creek Public School District will have numerous changes in the classroom as well as in administrative positions for the 2013-14 school term, but only two will be from retirements.
Ann Thompson and Deborah Vaughn both left the system at the beginning of the school year. Thompson was a counselor at Deer Creek High School. She had spent a total of 27 years in education. Five of those years had been in other school districts and the past 22 years had been in the Deer Creek School District. Vaughn retired as a classroom teacher at Deer Creek Grove Valley Elementary. She had spent the past five years in the Deer Creek School District and 17 years in other school districts. -

SEAS ranks No. 1 in Oklahoma in First in Math online program
Students at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton were rewarded for their mathematics skills Monday in an all-school assembly as they received the No. 1 spot in a national online math program. In addition to the students, two teachers were also recognized for the number of math problems they solved correctly.
