EDMOND — Tentative plans for the new Deer Creek Middle School recently were presented to school board members.

Socrates Lazaridis with Renaissance Architectural Associates presented renderings of the new middle school. The Deer Creek Board of Education has entered into contract negotiations with Flintco Constructive Solutions to oversee and build the district’s new construction projects.

Flintco is a large construction company with a significant amount of successful school construction experience, Superintendent Becky Wilkinson said.

The first project it will undertake, pending contract approval, is the construction of the second middle school. The district hopes to have bids awarded and construction under way in January.

The second middle school will be constructed on a site on the north side of 234th Street between May and Pennsylvania. A Deer Creek sign marks the location.

Board member Danny Barnes announced the Jan Seely Scholarship Fund now has $72,000 in it.

Seely, director of elementary curriculum, had worked in some capacity in the district since 1980 and died unexpectedly in September.

In other business, an election to vote to elect a board member for Jan Larson’s position No. 5 was set for Feb. 9, with a run-off election set for April 6 if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote.

Individuals interested in running for the No. 5 seat may file to run as a candidate at the Oklahoma County Election Board between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Dec. 7-9.

In other business, Richard Vrooman, director of Operations for the Deer Creek School District, reported the old gym roof is 100 percent complete.

Although rain and wind caused serious delays, Vrooman said, staff and students were using the old gym starting Nov. 3.

Vrooman also announced the Alumni Hall gym floor is complete.

“Traffic is still a serious concern at Grove Valley,” he said.

Entrance and exit signs have been installed on the front driveways and directional arrows have been painted on the front drive and parking lot.

The classroom additions at both Prairie Vale Elementary and Rose Union Elementary are expected to be ready for the 2010-11 school year.

Deer Creek Teachers of the Year for the individual schools include: Deer Creek Elementary, Amy Johnson; Prairie Vale Elementary, Tricia Cochlin; Rose Union Elementary, Stephanie Janz; Grove Valley Elementary, Karen Weiss; Deer Creek Middle School, Kari Steele; and Deer Creek High School, Deanna Roach.
