8-21 Education: in brief

EDMOND — Girl Scouts find their pathway back to school

With a new logo and a new way to participate, Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma is going back to school this year hoping to reach every girl with the leadership experience that comes with Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouts nationally has created a new way for girls to be involved called “Pathways.” Girls may still opt to be in a traditional troop, but girls now can choose among six different Pathways that allow them to select the activities, events and areas of focus that interest them the most.

The Pathways are defined by GSUSA, but local councils create their own activities such as the robotics teams focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), the HAT (High Adventure Team) activity, going to camp, traveling or others offered through Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma. The six Pathways are Troop, Camp, Travel, Series, Events and Virtual.

“Girls decide how they want to be a Girl Scout,” said Cathy Stackpole, CEO for Girl Scouts of Western Oklahoma. “This is a girl-led organization so we are providing them the Pathway options that they want. Some may want to be in a troop, others may just want to participate in the fall robotics teams. Whatever way they want to experience leadership in Girl Scouts, they can.”

Girl Scouts also is appealing to girls through a new logo. The longtime logo — the faces of three girls incorporated within the organization’s signature trefoil — has been tweaked so that the girls have bangs, perkier noses and differently shaped necks. The face logo and the trefoil alone also have taken on a brighter green color, a nod to the organization’s earlier days. Even though the logo changes aren’t radical, they are speaking to today’s generation, whose girls say they identify better with the presentation.

It seemed to be a time to pull the wagons closer for shelter and consolation.
