OKLAHOMA CITY —
The Oklahoma School of Science and Mathematics invites sophomore students interested in applying to OSSM to the Sophomore Preview Day from 1-3 p.m. Nov. 10 at the school’s main campus, 1141 N. Lincoln Blvd. in Oklahoma City. Reservation forms are available on the OSSM website at www.ossm.edu and will be accepted through Nov. 6.
Sophomores from throughout Oklahoma and their parents will hear about the school’s academic program, talk with current students, as well as tour the campus. Students apply to OSSM in March of their sophomore year. OSSM is a nationally recognized two-year, public math and science school funded by the legislature. There is no charge for tuition, room and board. This year’s application deadline is March 7, 2013.
Suzanne Donnolo, OSSM admissions director, said that OSSM assists students with “jump starting” their college academic profile. “Our graduates have gone to more than 157 prestigious colleges and universities in Oklahoma and throughout the United States.”
The OSSM Class of 2012 had an ACT average of 32.6, boasted 15 National Merit Finalists, claimed three Academic All-State Scholars and one U.S. Presidential Scholar and collectively received in excess of $8 million in scholarships.
“Our nation places tremendous value on math and science education because the U.S. lags behind other countries in these areas. At OSSM, we look for students who have a keen interest in these subjects,” Donnolo said. “Oklahoma has many bright and academically talented students, and we try our best to identify these young people. Our recruitment pool comes from alumni, school counselors, teachers, legislators, community patrons and students’ families. The school’s preview day is just one more way to seek potentially qualified students.”
The mission of OSSM is to prepare young Oklahomans to be critical thinkers. The curriculum is designed to immerse students in a rigorous two-year program of advanced physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry and humanities.
OSSM serves all Oklahoma schools and students through math contests, research, teacher training and outreach activities. For more information and to download an application, visit the school’s website www.ossm.edu, click on Apply Now.
