EDMOND —
Cimarron Middle School’s Student Council and FCCLA partnered together for the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank’s “Students Against Hunger Food Drive.”
“The Regional Food Bank contacted me to see if we were interested in participating in the food drive and the timing was perfect to fit in with FCCLA’s Food Drive Service Project,” said Student Council sponsor Callie McNickle.
Initially McNickle said she asked for nine boxes that would each hold 100 pounds of food, thinking if the students could collect 300 pounds of food per grade level they would be doing good
“The Regional Food Bank partnered us with the Edmond Grace Fellowship, and when we began collecting all of the donations from each classroom to bring them downstairs and get them ready to be picked up, we quickly filled all nine boxes and had hundreds of cans still in the wagons,” McNickle said.
McNickle had to call the Regional Food Bank and request 15 more boxes just to hold all of the students’ donations.
“The other neat thing is Cimarron’s weekend Backpack Program will benefit from the drive as well. All of the peanut butter crackers, applesauce, Vienna sausages, etc., were pulled out to keep here for Cimarron students in need,” McNickle said.
All together more than 2,700 items were collected by the Cimarron Panthers to benefit the community of Edmond.
“We are really appreciative of all the food the students donated,” said Paul Ambriz, a volunteer with Edmond Grace Fellowship.
