EDMOND — Girl Scout Troop 26 works toward silver

Girl Scouts from Troop 26 worked on their silver award by holding a Foster Family Appreciation Dinner May 11 at Memorial Road Church of Christ in honor of Foster Family Appreciation Month.

The dinner honored foster families affiliated with Christian Services of Oklahoma. The families were served barbecue sandwiches and homemade sides and dessert, and there were stations for children in these foster homes to play games, have faces painted and win prizes.

The six members of troop 26 worked together to plan this event and will each acheive the silver award, a significant achievement in Girl Scouting. The members of the troop include Sarah Flowers, Haylee Hollingsworth, Cayla Clouse, Madeline Decker, Amelia Jones and Cheyenne Pierce.



Deer Creek Foundation plans golf tourney

Headquarters recognizes North’s JROTC instructors

Lt. Col. Lester P. Tucker,  Lt. Col. Kenneth W. Young and Senior Master Sgt. Billy A. Deal, all JROTC instructors at Edmond North High School have been selected by their headquarters as “Outstanding Instructors” for the 2009-10 school year.

“By exemplifying the very best of the Air Force, you truly are the heart and soul of what makes AFJROTC such a success in your community,” said Greg Winn, deputy director, Air Force JROTC.



Central teacher takes part in summer learning odyssey

Carrie Clark, Central Middle School teacher, has been chosen by the Fund for Teachers through the Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence and the Tulsa Community Foundation to be one of 66 Oklahoma PreK-12 teachers with fellowships for self-designed professional development.

She will be using LabQuest technology to collect soil and water samples in Yellowstone National Park to demonstrate how to maximize the use of technology in science exploration and methodology.



Local student earns Modern Woodmen of America scholarship

Logan J. Washbourne has been awarded a $500 educational award in a national competition with other students who are members of Modern Woodmen of America. Modern Woodmen, a fraternal benefit society offering financial services, has local representatives and is based in Rock Island, Ill.

Washbourne, the son of Steve and Tracy Washbourne, plans to use the grant to atted Okahoma State University. He is one of 100 grant winners chosen this year.



2010 MacDowell Club of Allied Arts Scholarship winners

Edmond Santa Fe High School student Michael Jones is one of three MacDowell Club of Oklahoma City Allied Arts Scholarship winners. Each year the organization gives three $500 scholarships to outstanding high school seniors in the greater metropolitan area, who will be pursuing one of the arts on a college or university level.

Jones’ goal is to become a professional violist, and he is planning on attending the University of Central Oklahoma. He has been the principal violist of the Oklahoma Youth Orchestra for the past two years, and he has won the Buttram Solo Competition and Buttram Quartet Competition for three consecutive years.

This year he was named the Buttram Overall Winner. He has been principal Violist of the All State OMEA Orchestra for three years. He has wanted to be a professional musician since the seventh grade, and has dedicated himself wholly to classical music.
