Bishop McGuinness alumni host Trivia Night
Approximately 430 people turned out for the fifth annual Bishop McGuinness Clancy’s Challenge “Go Green” Trivia Night on Aug. 21 in the McGuinness Commons. The event was hosted by the BMCHS Alumni Association but open to anyone. Committee Chairperson was Lisa Corsoro Rooks ’89 and Master of Ceremonies was local newscaster Meg Alexander, of KFOR News. All proceeds from Trivia Night go to the Bishop McGuinness Alumni Scholarship Fund.
After eight rounds of questions, the overall winner was “Na H’Amadain” which means “fools” in Irish. This was the second time in three years this group has claimed the championship. The year’s team consisted of John Fritch ’88, Thalia Eddleman, Margaret Tunell, Web Mayfield, David Evans ’88, Dr. Bill Tunell, Molly Fritch ’92, Pamm Deal, Lindsay Watson ’93 and Jo Stansberry.
Winners will have their name engraved on the traveling shillelagh trophy, which is passed from winner to winner each year. The trophy entitles the winning group to complimentary prime seating at next year’s event plus bragging rights for the year.
The National Gardening Association and The Home Depot Announce the 2011 Youth Garden Grants
The National Gardening Association is now accepting applications for the 2011 Youth Garden Grants program, sponsored for the sixth consecutive year by The Home Depot. NGA began the Youth Garden Grants program 28 years ago, and has since recognized and rewarded more than 5,000 projects that get kids outdoors and growing.
To be eligible, applicants must garden with 15 youth ages 3 to 18 in the United States. Past grant winners include public, private and home schools, preschool and Head Start programs, day care centers, nonprofit agencies, faith-based projects, governmental agencies, community gardens, gardening clubs and others. To be selected for a grant, applicants must demonstrate projects that are carefully planned, comprehensive, supported by the community and sustainable. In 2011, 100 grants are available. Packages are as follows:
1. Five programs will receive a $1000 award consisting of a $500 gift card to The Home Depot and a $500 gift card to NGA’s Gardening with Kids catalog and online store.
2. 95 programs will receive a $500 gift card to The Home Depot.
3. All grantees also receive educational materials and curricula from NGA.

Local National Merit Finalist accepted to Harding University
Amanda Rice of Edmond is one of 20 National Merit Scholars accepted to Harding University for the fall 2010 semester.
Rice is a graduate of Edmond Memorial High School.
Harding is the largest private university in Arkansas and attracts more National Merit Scholars than any other private university in the state. The 20 additional scholars this fall bring the total number on campus to more than 50.
Finalists are offered a full-tuition and technology fee scholarship to the University for eight semesters, plus a $2,000 stipend per year that can be used toward additional educational expenses. Each recipient must maintain a 3.25 grade point average to keep the scholarship.
Area students accepted to the University of Tulsa
TULSA — The following local students have been accepted to The University of Tulsa:
• Emily E. Skalovsky, a 2010 graduate of Casady High School in Oklahoma City.
Skalovsky is the child of Edward and Jane Skalovsky of Edmond. Skalovsky has been awarded an academic scholarship.
• Jasmine L. Hfoon, a 2010 graduate of Oklahoma School of Science & Mathematics in Oklahoma City.
Hfoon is the child of Myo and Josie Hfoon of Edmond. Hfoon has been awarded academic scholarships, Vision Scholarship and W.L. Nelson Alumni Scholarship for Chemical Engineering.
• Bailey S. Ardies, a 2010 graduate of Edmond Memorial High School.
Ardies is the daughter of Allyson Ardies of Edmond and David Ardies, and has been awarded an academic scholarship.
• Alaina E. Hamilton, a 2010 graduate of Classen School of Advanced Studies in Oklahoma City.
Hamilton is the daughter of Stephen and Tamela Hamilton of Edmond, and has been admitted to the honors program.
