Wolves on top after day one

— OKLAHOMA CITY - It was not a typical start to the Class 6A state golf tournament. After two rounds, an Edmond team was atop of the leader board, but this time was not three-time defending state champion Edmond North. The surprising Santa Fe boys used a strong finish in the second round, to take the early lead at the Class 6A state golf tournament Monday at Lincoln Park West Golf Course.
“Anytime you’re leading Edmond North, you’ve had a heck of a day,” Santa Fe coach Mike Stolz said. “I’m not going to say we just played fantastic, North was pretty generous today, Will Kropp shoots one under and Geoff Shaw is over, that just doesn’t happen. They didn’t play their best, so they gave us an opportunity and luckily we were able to take advantage of it.”
The Wolves lead the way with a score of 577, the Huskies are a close second with 579, Jenks sits in third place with 582, and Memorial finished the first day with a score of 620.
Tulsa Union’s Stephen Carney was the top individual scorer, finishing the day 3-under par with rounds of 73-65. Kropp was 1-under with rounds of 71-70 to finish in second place, and Santa Fe’s Dillon Rust and Drew Dorsey are tied for third with 142.
North coach Jeff Doherty was a bit uneasy, after see his team lose the lead after two rounds.
“It’s going to be a dog fight, and we haven’t been in one like this, the boys think it is fun, but it makes me a nervous wreck,” North coach Jeff Doherty said.
“In the past it was more like we were competing for the individual title, but this year that doesn’t really matter, if we can just get some solid scores, and if I can step up a little bit better we can hopefully get it done,” Shaw said.
Santa Fe’s Andrew Green shot a 74-71 and Logan Waresback finished with rounds of 76-72.
Shaw finished in a four-way tie for sixth place with rounds of 72-73.
Senior Zach Ming and Conner Kurtz were the Bulldogs top performers Monday, with both shooting 154. Jake Persun finished with rounds of 77-78 and Travis Arnold shot 79-78.
“It was tough out there, but overall I was pretty pleased with the guys today,” Memorial coach Josh Fosdick said. “Most of the time our guys struggle in the wind, and I was proud to get four scores in the 70s out of these guys.”

Class 5A
The Deer Creek boys chances for a repeat of last year’s state title have become quite a long shot, as Ardmore took a 19-stroke lead after one day of play at the Class 4A state tournament at Dornick Hills Country Club.
After an hour rain delay, the Antlers jumped to an early lead in the first round of play, but dropped to third behind Ardmore and Duncan at the end of the day. The Tigers finished the day with a score o 573, Duncan is in second with 587 and Deer Creek is a close third with 593.
“Many thought it was a two horse race, we just needed another week and a half of practice, we’ve just been struggling to regain form from when we won it a year ago,” Deer Creek coach David Morrison said.
Ian Davis is tied for third place with rounds of 74-69 and Garrett Francis shot rounds of 74-72.
