Edmond North boys bound for state

Consistency was the key for the Edmond North boy’s tennis team during the Class 5A regional tournament Monday afternoon at KickingBird Tennis Center.

The No. 4-ranked Huskies placed third overall at the tournament, and qualified their entire team to the state tournament, which begins Friday at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center.

The Huskies got off to a strong start at the regional, but struggled in the finals. All four North teams made it to the finals, but came away with second place finishes.

“I’m happy we qualified all teams for state, but it would have been nice to have four champions,” North coach Dee Waller said. “I’m not complaining about anyone’s performance today, but we’re just going to have to step it up a bit come Friday.”

Sophomore Casey Distaso is the Huskies lone returning state qualifier, at No. 1 singles. Distaso (14-5) knocked off Yukon’s David Delgado and Norman North’s Chris Morris, but fell to Putnam City North’s Chris Haworth 7-6, 6-1 in the finals.

“It’s interesting because last year I was the only one without experience, and this year I’m the only one that has any experience at state,” Distaso said.

Sophomore Nick Jordan (14-6) also qualified for state at No. 2 Singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Bryce Lilley and Alex Mathieson took second, after losing to Norman North in the finals.

No. 2 doubles team of senior Blake Anderson and freshman P.J. Osborn beat PC North in the semifinals, for the first time this season, but lost to Norman North in the finals 6-1, 6-2.
