Lady Huskies headed to state title game

North soccer beats Mustang 2-1 on penalty kicks

MUSTANG It was another nail-biter for the Edmond North girl’s soccer team on Tuesday night, as the Lady Huskies wrapped up it’s third straight trip to the state finals, who escaped with a 2-1 win over Mustang, after beating the Broncos 3-1 on penalty kicks.

North got on the board midway through the first half when Shayna Kindsvater scored off an assist from Taylor Cofer, to take a 1-0 lead.

But Mustang’s Abby Hodgen tied it up with 35:47 remaining, and it stayed that way for the remainder of the contest, which included two overtimes.

Though the score didn’t indicate it, the Lady Huskies dominated the game. North had 29 shots on goal, to just seven for Mustang. But when the game went to penalty kicks North exerted its dominance.

“We were asking the girls who wants to take them (PK’s) and all of our seniors stepped up. We had seven girls that wanted to take them, and only five can. All of these girls have confidence in themselves,” North head coach Jessica Dickerson said.

Kindsvater, Hope Heinen and Cofer, found the net on their penalty kicks, while goalkeeper Skylar Rosson gave up just one, giving the Lady Huskies the win.

Rosson finished the game with nine saves, including penalty kicks. Mustang goalkeeper Raven Benson had a great performance for the Broncos with 22 saves in the match.

North will now take on Tulsa Union in the state finals at Tulsa University, in a re-match of last year’s state finals. The Lady Huskies edged out Union on penalty kicks earlier this season.

“It should be a good game, we played them in district. It was tied 1-1, we went double-overtime, then we went to PK’s and won, same as here. It’s going to be a great finals,” Dickerson said.
