Union slides past Memorial

EDMOND With defending Class 6A state champion Tulsa Union in town, and a trip to the state title game on the line, the Edmond Memorial girls had little room for error. But the No. 4-ranked Redskins found an opening late in the first half of Tuesday night’s semifinal contest and cashed in on it.

Junior midfielder Caitlin Redmond fought through a mob of players in front of the Memorial goal, and squeezed a shot past Brittan Elder. The goal was all the Redskins (14-2) needed to pull out the 1-0 win and advance to Friday’s title match against No. 2-ranked Edmond North.

“This deep in the playoffs it just takes one mistake, it wasn’t even bad one, the girl hit a great shot,” Memorial assistant coach Scott Haselwood said.

Memorial head coach Wade Moseley said he was pleased with the way the team finished the season strong, after starting district play with a pair of losses.

“I’m very proud of them, coming from third place in district and winning two playoffs games on the road against two traditionally tough teams, was very impressive,” Moseley said.

Both teams had a tough time getting clean looks at the goal. The Redskins managed to out-shoot Memorial 8-5, but had very few uncontested shots. Elder recorded six saves for Memorial.

“They were playing with the deep sweeper and we were having trouble keeping our forwards up to take advantage of the space they were giving us, and finally towards later in the second half they started taking that space,” Haselwood said.

The No. 6-ranked Memorial girls finished the season 12-4.
