Four-peat

Huskies storm to 6A state title

OKLAHOMA CITY Led by seniors Geoff Shaw and Will Kropp, the Edmond North boy's golf team wrapped up its fourth-straight team title on Tuesday at Lincoln Park West Golf Course, as it separated from Jenks down the stretch to win by four strokes, making it a clean sweep for the senior duo.

"It feels good. I didn't want to be remembered as one of the players on a great team to not win the state championship. It's nice to go out on top," Shaw said, following Tuesday's round of 73, which left him in sixth place individually.

North shot a third round 293, while Jenks shot a 294, and first-day leader Santa Fe shot a three-round total of 883 to fall into third place, 11-strokes off the pace.

Kropp and Shaw, each birdied No. 14, which was the turning point in the tournament.

While the polls may have had Putnam City North No. 1 throughout the season, Doherty knew his team could win the state title, despite the lack of respect.

"The poll thing this season was agonizing, it was a joke. They had P.C. North ranked above us all year, and we beat them by 30 strokes every time we faced them. The coaches were not paying attention to the results," Doherty said. "I knew if my No. 1 and No. 2 played well, then we could win the title. We have the best No. 1 and No. 2 in the state, and Nos. 3, 4 and 5, are as good as anyone they are going to face."

Kropp took second place in the tournament with rounds of 71-70-70=211 to finish three strokes behind medalist Stephen Carney from Tulsa Union.

Chandler Rusk finished fourth in the individual standings with rounds of 70-73-74=217, while Greg O'Conner posted rounds of 77-75-76. Teammate Kaleb Yates shot rounds 75-77-78.

Santa Fe stumbled on the final day of the tournament, but junior Drew Dorsey finished third in the individual standings, posting rounds of 72-70-75=211.

Central Oklahoma-signee Andrew Green had rounds of 74-71-76=221, Dillon Rust went 70-72-78=220, while Logan Waresback posted rounds of 76-72-77.

Santa Fe's Matt Helms, who was disqualified in the second round, posted an 80 in the third.

Memorial's Travis Arnold finished with 232 strokes for the tournament after rounds of 71-78-77, while Zach Ming posted scores of 76-78-85, and Jake Persun went 77-78-80.

Conner Kurtz shot 79-73-86, and Andy Eischeid went 81-81-75.
