The battle tested Edmond North girl’s soccer team will make it’s third-straight state title appearance tonight when it travels to the University of Tulsa to take on defending state champion Tulsa Union. And much like the April 11th matchup, this one is expected to go down to the wire.
The two schools have only met once this season — a 2-1 shoot-out victory for the Lady Huskies — and it’s that type of environment that North clearly feels comfortable in, at least as of late.
“It should be a really good game,” North head coach Jessica Dickerson said. “They only lost one (player from last year’s squad). We played them in districts, it was tied 1-1, double-overtime, and we won on PK’s. It should be a great finals.”
No. 2-ranked North (16-1) scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to knock off third-ranked Broken Arrow in the semi-finals, then avenged its only loss of the year to Mustang in a 2-1 shoot-out win on Tuesday.
“Just how they can keep their composure, and keep working throughout the course of the playoffs has really been neat to see,” Dickerson said. “Our girls are confident heading into PK’s. We won in PK’s against Union in district play, and we actually won our semi-final game last year against Broken Arrow on PK’s.”
The Lady Huskies were rarely tested throughout the course of the season, winning by an average score of 4-0, excluding the playoffs and its 2-1 loss to Mustang.
It has been three years since a team from the west side of the state has won the girls state title, with Norman being the last, as the Lady Tigers won in 2004 and 2005. Jenks won the previous five years, then took the 2006 title.
North has won one state title, winning it in 4A in 1994, while Union’s only win in the title game came last season.
The game is scheduled for an 8 p.m. start at the University of Tulsa soccer complex.
