Wolves make early exit at state tourney

No. 2-ranked Santa Fe eliminated after losses to Jenks and Broken Arrow

BIXBY— After several years of frustrating performances at the Class 6A state baseball tournament, Edmond Santa Fe was determined to change that this time around, as they brought one of their most talented lineups to the field Friday in Bixby.

But once again those expectations were fruitless, as the No. 2-ranked Wolves were shown the door, after collecting seven hits and committing eight errors in a pair of losses to Jenks and Broken Arrow.

“It’s just so depressing, it seems like we come every year with a quality team and we just can’t seem to get out of it,” Santa Fe coach Lonny Cobble said. “Especially this year, we’ve beat six of the eight teams that are in the state tournament, and the only one we haven’t beat is the team we haven’t played.

“And then we come up here and just have two really bad games, and played like we haven’t played all year.”



Jenks 10, Santa Fe 4

The Santa Fe squad appeared to shake off the rust, as they battled back in the sixth inning. A pair of singles by Josh Rosecrans and Rich Hawkins set the table for Tyler Sturges’ two-run double, to pull within in one run of Jenks.

But that would be all the closer they would get, as the Trojans scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning, including a three-run blast by Daniel Parham, to make it a 10-4 final.

The Wolves fell behind Jenks early in the game when Mark Ginther hit a three-run blast in the top of the first inning.

Santa Fe got on the board in the second inning, when it scored a run off an error and another on a RBI-single by Jordan Lopez, making it a 3-2 contest.

Jenks extended its lead with an RBI-double by Nick Peer in the fourth, and a solo home run by Mike Sartin in the fifth, to make it a 5-2 game.



Broken Arrow 9, Santa Fe 1

Santa Fe’s hopes of bouncing back in Friday’s nightcap were dashed, as Broken Arrow socked to home runs in a seven-run third inning.

After Duke Vonshamman tied the game 1-1 with a solo-homer in the second inning, the Tigers got a two-run homer from Lance Rymel and three-run blast from Cale Replogle to take a commanding 9-1 lead in the third inning.

The Wolves never recovered, and collected just two more base hits in the game, as Broken Arrow closed out the win.
