Lady Wolves take silver

Jeff Harrison
The Edmond Sun

After a one-year absence, Edmond Santa Fe’s Constance Ezugha is again the state’s best female long jumper. The Lady Wolves junior, who won the event as a freshman, regained her title with a leap of 19 feet, 4.5 inches at Saturday’s Class 6A state track meet in Ardmore.

While it was that jump that earned her a gold medal, it was not her best of the season. Ezugha set the state record on March 1 at Putnam City High School with a jump of 20 feet, 6.5.

Ezugha earned another individual medal when she placed second in the 200-meter dash and helped the Lady Wolves to a second place overall finish with 82 points. Midwest City easily ran away with Class 6A girls’ title winning it by 35 points, Edmond North took fourth with 66 points, and Edmond Memorial was 11th with 19 points.

Santa Fe’s Blessing Uba and Natasha Kotey also had strong performances in Ardmore. Uba took fourth in the 800-meter run and Kotey was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

The LadyWolves also enjoyed success in the relays. The team earned second place finishes in the 100, 400 and 800-meter relays, and a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter relay.

The North girls also took home two gold medals at the meet. Kylie Cooper won her second pole vault title with a leap of 9 feet 9 inches. And the Lady Huskies 800-meter relay team of Hannah Helker, Kara Reinhart, Erin Watson and Ashley Webb won the title for the second year in a row with a time of 9:45.15.

Earning silver medals for North was Helker in the 800-meter run, and Miranda King and Jessica Bachrodt, who tied for second in the pole vault.

Watson was third in the 1600-meter run (5:27.89), Mesha Ham took fourth in the shot put and fifth in the discus.

North also got fifth-place finishes from Helker in the 1600-meter run, Bailey Gatewood in the 300-meter hurdles, and sixth-place finishes from Tanita Dewberry in the 400-meter dash and Cooper in the 100-meter hurdles.

“We were pleased to finish fourth behind some very good teams, it speaks very highly of the kids,” North coach Kent Douglas said.

Memorial medaled in three events. The Lady ‘Dogs earned third-place finishes from Abi Morrison in the discus (123-10), and the 800-meter relay. Junior Jill Enge took sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:22.61.

Class 5A

Freshman Hillarie Kessler led the way for the Deer Creek girls, who placed seventh at the Class 5A girl’s state tournament in Ardmore. Kessler won the 1600-meter run (5:29.15) and took second in the 3200-meter run.

Sarah Nsikak came home with two fourth-place finishes in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Senior Sarah Rowland was fourth in the 3200-meter run and pole vauler Lindsey Bull took fifth.
