'Dogs help East pull out a thriller
Jeff Harrison

OKLAHOMA CITY —
The high flying dunks and jaw dropping plays were enough to make the crowd at Thursday night’s Boy’s All Big-City game smile. But the Edmond boys helped up the ante, as they turned a blowout into a nail-bitter.
After falling behind by over 20 points in the third quarter, the West squad rallied back and made things interesting. Deer Creek’s Josh Phillips hit his second 3-pointer of the night to tie the score 101-101 with 2:24 left in the game.
Putnam City North’s Brentrell Friday, who signed with Central Oklahoma, hit a pair of free throws to give the West a one-point lead with 1:50 left. But the East squad led by Memorial coach Shane Cowherd managed to regain the lead, and hold on for a 110-103 victory Thursday night.
“It was a little interesting at the end, but it this was about as good of an all-star game as I’ve been associated with,” Cowherd said. “The game was competitive, it was fun for the fans, it was fun for the kids, and the talent on both teams was unbelievable.”
“It was an all-star game at least we made it competitive in the end,” Santa Fe coach Shawn Schenk, who led the West squad.
Memorial’s Daniel White helped the East get off to a fast start when he scored six points in the first half, including a pair of dunks. He finished the night with eight points, to lead all Edmond players.
“It was a real fun experience, you don’t usually sit on the bench as much, but it was just fun to join everyone out here,” White said. “There’s just so much talent out here, it’s like every play was exciting, there was never a dull moment.”
Phillips finished the game six points, and put on a show with his long-range shooting earlier in the night. The Oklahoma City University signee hit 20 treys to win the boys’ 3-point shooting contest. Phillips appeared to have a tough battle, when U.S. Grant’s Robert Pruitt, started off the contest by hitting 16 treys.
Memorial’s Daniel Romano added four points for the East, and Santa Fe forward Ross Morrisett scored two points for the West.
East 108, West 66 (Girls)
Edmond was well represented in the girls’ game, but the area standouts were not able to come away with a win. Edmond North’s Kelsey Gregory led the West squad with 15 points, but it was not enough, as the East girls won 108-66.
Edmond Santa Fe’s Ciara Thomas also had a strong night for the West squad. The Lady Wolves senior, who will join Gregory next season at Northern Oklahoma College in Enid, finished with 14 points.
“It’s fun to finally get to play with people you know, usually we’re rivals, but no we got to play together so it was fun,” Thomas said.
Deer Creek’s Courtney Cook also got on the board when she hit a 3-pointer in the second half.
North’s Hope Heinen had a strong showing in the 3-point shooting contest, but was narrowly edged out by Norman North’s Molly McClure. The two shooters tied in the first round with 10 treys, but McClure was one better in the second round when she hit seven shots to win it.
