Wolves pound Plainsmen in state tourney

Jeff Harrison

The Edmond Santa Fe AAA team could do no wrong Friday night. The Wolves pounded out 15 hits and Duke vonShamann tossed a gem, as the Santa Fe topped Enid 12-1 in the second round of the 3A Oklahoma American Legion State Tournament.

The Wolves finished the game with 15 hits, and the entire starting lineup collected a hit. Alex Hill led the way going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and a pair of doubles.

vonShamann allowed just one run on three hits.

“Duke kept us in the game, Duke is always going to keep us in the game,” Santa Fe coach Andrew McGuire. “We played a little defense and we hit, it was a good combination today.”

Corey Clair gave the Wolves an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. But Enid answered in the third when Joe Black scored from third on a wild pitch, for the team’s only run of the night.

Santa Fe regained control with a big fourth inning. Jordan Lopez hit a three-run blast, giving the Wolves a 6-1 lead.

The Wolves finished things off with a five-run sixth inning. Clayton Blackburn reached on an error scoring vonShamann, to make it an 8-1 game. Blackburn later scored on a wild pitch, and Clair, Tommy Jacobson, and Hill each drove in runs to round out the scoring.

Tyler Hukill came on in the sixth and closed out Enid for the run rule win.

Santa Fe will take the field tonight against the winner of the Edmond Memorial/Putnam City North game. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. at Memorial.

The Bulldogs advanced to the second round, after beating Claremore 6-5 on Thursday night. A loss would send Memorial to the loser’s bracket, where they would host Vinita today at 2:30 p.m.
