STILLWATER — Santa Fe head coach Rhonda Lawson let her squad know that in her 10 years as a head coach they had never lost a season opener, as her team prepared to play Tulsa Union in the Stillwater Festival.
Well, she can tell that to next year’s squad because the unblemished record stayed in tact on Friday, as the Lady Wolves scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to down Union, 2-1.
With one out, Sierra Bronkey hit her second double of the game, followed by a single from Evan Gray to put runners on the corners. Whitley Davis then stepped up and hit the ball down the leftfield line driving in the game-winning runs.
“It was such a sweet win,” Lawson said. “They really played with great composure and were never shook up when behind. We only had one senior on the field, so we are excited to see the younger girls playing so well.”
Bronkey earned the win, giving up an unearned run, while also going 3-for-3 at the plate.
“She was very solid the entire game,” Lawson said.
Union scored its lone run of the contest in the fifth inning.
Lady Wolves 3, Owasso 1
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Amanda Cain led off the inning with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt from Hayden James.
With two outs Bronkey followed with an RBI double, and Gray came through with a run-scoring single to give the Lady Wolves a 2-1 lead.
In the sixth, Karly Nevez got on by error, and with one out Cailee Null hit a shot up the middle to drive Nevez home.
“Bronkey and Gray really hit well today,” Lawson said. “The came up with key hits when we needed it. Evan Gray pitched a great game for us. She was very controlled and poised.”
The win upped Santa Fe’s record to 2-0.
The Lady Wolves are scheduled to play at Mustang tonight at 6, followed by the Deer Creek Varsity Festival set to kick off on Friday.
