Memorial shines at DC Festival

The Edmond Memorial softball team showed no signs of slowing down, as they rolled through the second day of the Deer Creek Festival. The Lady ‘Dogs brought out the bats, and cruised to wins over Piedmont and Blanchard Friday at Deer Creek High School.

“I’m very pleased with the girls, they’ve looked very good so far,” Memorial coach Janet Chartney said.

Memorial started things off with an early game against Piedmont. The Lady ‘Dogs picked up 12 hits and easily cruised to a 5-0 win.

Torrie Brown led the way for Memorial at plate, going 3-for-3. Jasmine Tartt and Lauren Tyndall also had multiple hit games for the Lady ‘Dogs.

Audrey Barrow kept the Piedmont hitters in check. The junior threw a five inning no-hitter and struck out six for the win.

Allison Widener and Tyndall came up big for Memorial in their second game of the night. Tyndall gave Memorial the lead with a three-run double in the fourth inning, and Widener put it away with a grand slam in the fifth, as the Lady ‘Dogs knocked off Blanchard 8-3.

“(Widener) has been hitting balls hard all week, but she just sent that one over the left fielder’s head,” Chartney said.

Rachel Baker threw four innings, allowing one run on three hits. Caitlin Zuerker then closed it out with two innings of relief.

The same could not be said for Deer Creek and Santa Fe, who found little offense on Friday.

The Lady Antlers dropped their first game to Elgin 3-2, and fell to Blanchard 2-0 later in the afternoon.

Santa Fe’s bats were also quiet Friday afternoon. They Lady Wolves scored just one run all day and finished with a split.

Santa Fe opened the day with a 1-0 win over Elgin, but picked up just three hits off El Reno’s Chelsea Jones in a 2-0 loss.

“She did her job on the mound, but we weren’t smart at the plate, we didn’t adjust at all,” Santa Fe coach Rhonda Lawson said about Jones who struck out nine.

The Lady Wolves looked to get things going in the top of the fourth inning, when Hayden James drew a lead off walk. James advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and later moved to third on a single by Evan Gray. But Jones fanned the next two batters to end the inning.

El Reno took the lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the inning, and scored again in the fifth to make it a 2-0 final.

The Deer Creek varsity squad will be back in action today for the final action of the festival. The Lady Antlers face Berryhill at 12 p.m.
