Memorial hopes to get on field soon
Jeff Harrison
The Edmond Sun
The Edmond Memorial softball team is having a tough time getting on the field lately. After a strong performance Friday in the Prague Tournament, the Lady ‘Dogs were only able to get two games in Saturday, before a rain storm cut their weekend short.
Memorial then hoped to beat the oncoming storms on Tuesday night, but their contest at Norman North was postponed due to an absentee officiating crew.
The Lady ‘Dogs got off to a rough start on the final day of the Prague Tournament. The Lady ‘Dogs got their offense rolling late in Saturday’s opener against the Choctaw JV team, but it was not enough, as they fell by a 4-3 final.
“We have gotten beat by two teams we did not focus on,” Memorial coach Janet Chartney said. “We have to play good ball in every game, we can not take teams lightly.”
Rachel Baker led the way for Memorial, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, while Tori Walker was 2-for-4.
Memorial had better luck in their final tournament game against Stroud. Allison Widener hit a two-run walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Memorial to an 8-7 win.
“We came out hitting and did well,” Chartney said. “But we are giving up too many hits and big innings.”
The Lady ‘Dogs scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Stroud answered with a five-run fourth inning to pull in front 6-4.
Melanie Easley then saved the game for the Lady ‘Dogs with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning, which tied the scored 6-6.
Stroud scored one run in the tie-breaking seventh inning. But Widener put an end to with a double that scored Torrie Brown and Lauren Tyndall to win it.
Tyndall finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate, and Widener, Walker and Easley each added two hits.
Audrey Barrow started the game for Memorial, and threw 4 2/3 innings, allowing seven hits. Baker came on in relief in the fifth inning and got the win.
Memorial is scheduled to host Southmoore on Thursday night in the home opener.
