The Deer Creek cross country teams opened the season with a sweep at the Sapulpa Chieftain Invitational on Saturday.
Deer Creek easily took the varsity girls competition, winning the event with 29 points, while the host team took second with 79. The boy’s team also had little difficulty with the race, and took the event with 45 points, while Bixby came in second with 75 points.
The Lady Antlers finished with the top runner, but surprisingly it was not 2007 state runner-up, Hillarie Kessler. Deer Creek freshman Roman Edwards took the top spot with a time of 5:46, edging out Stroud’s Kora McGee.
Kessler finished fourth with a time of 6:02, sophomore Lantana McGraw was seventh, and Alyssa Nale placed ninth.
Dakota Buck led the Antlers squad, taking second overall with a time of 11:23. Deer Creek’s Aaron White finished third with a time of 11:27, and Tayler Beck took seventh with a time of 11:35.
Austin Christian of Kellyville won the boy’s race with a time of 10:46.
Deer Creek returns to action Friday at the Santa Fe Wolf Run.
