Memorial freshmen topple Santa Fe

The Edmond Sun

Edlam football hit the freshman ranks Monday night, and it was the Edmond Memorial squad that came out on top. The ‘Dogs used a strong ground game and a big-play defense to pull out a 26-19 win over Edmond Santa Fe.

The Memorial defense helped set up their first score of the game, when a gang tackle by Derek Hackett, Matt Hickman and Will Hale led to a Santa Fe fumble. On the next play Gavin Fouts broke a 38-yard run, and was tackled at the one-yard line. That run set up a one-yard score by the ‘Dogs, making it a 6-0 game.

The Wolves later pulled in front with an 18-yard touchdown pass. But the lead proved to be short-lived, as David Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 95-yards for a score, giving Memorial a 12-7 lead.

The ‘Dogs then later extended the lead with the help of a pass interference call on a 4th-and-27 from the Wolves 37-yard line. On the following play, Fouts scored on a 22-yard run, and Ry Huff hit Dalton Cooper for the two-point conversion, giving Memorial a 20-7 halftime lead.

After a quiet third quarter, Santa Fe chipped away at the lead with a 21-yard touchdown run, but the ‘Dogs came right back with a 61-yard touchdown run by David Smith.

Cooper helped end a fourth quarter Santa Fe drive when he picked off a pass on the Memorial 25-yard line. But the Wolves bounced back again with a 38-yard scoring strike. Jake Minyen blocked the point after attempt, making it a 26-19 final.
