Wet weather cuts OU Tourney short

Lady Wolves knock off Memorial in opener

Like many sporting events last week, the wet weather shortened the annual the University of Oklahoma high school softball tournament.

Edmond Santa Fe had the strongest showing of the three area teams that competed over the weekend. The Lady Wolves finished the tournament 3-1 including a thrilling victory over rival Edmond Memorial.

The Lady Wolves opened the tournament with a pitcher’s duel against Memorial. Audrey Barrow and Sierra Bronkey kept the scoreboard full of zeros, before Santa Fe’s Madison Martin delivered with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning. The freshman’s big hit scored Karly Nevez to give the Lady Wolves a 1-0 win.

“It was just one of those games where no one was doing much, and we were just able to get out of there with a win,” Santa Fe coach Rhonda Lawson said.

Bronkey got the win, allowing three hits in seven innings of work, and striking out eight. Barrow meanwhile gave up just two hits in the loss.

Santa Fe rounded out the night with an 8-0 win over Putnam City West.

Evan Gray led the potent Lady Wolves lineup, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. The senior also didn’t give the Patriots a chance to get on the board, throwing a six-inning no-hitter and striking out 12 in the win.

After a late night game, Santa Fe returned to Norman for an 8 a.m. showdown with No. 2-ranked Westmoore. The Lady Wolves struggled in their first action of the day, losing 4-0.

But Santa Fe bounced back in their final action of the week, blanking Perkins, 8-0 on Saturday afternoon.

Gray again had the hot bat for the Lady Wolves, going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, while Bronkey was a home run shy of the cycle.

Memorial was unable to follow up a strong outing against Santa Fe when they took on Westmoore Friday night. The Jaguars scored six runs in the fifth inning, and easily beat Memorial 12-2.

“Westmoore is a great team and we did not play well, put those two things together and you’re in trouble,” Memorial coach Janet Chartney said.

The Lady ‘Dogs got off to a rough start again on Saturday. They had a tough time getting hits off Washington, and fell by a final score of 7-0.

After three tough games, the Lady ‘Dogs wrapped up the tournament with a convincing 10-0 win over PC West.

Tori Walker and Torrie Brown each went 3-for-3 at the plate against the Patriots. And Caitlin Zuerker picked up the win, with four scoreless innings of work.

Walker, Brown and Lauren Tyndall finished the weekend with five hits apiece.

Deer Creek split their Friday games, losing to Mustang 4-0 and pulling out a 1-0 win over Claremore. The Lady Antlers then lost their final tournament game on Saturday, falling to Davenport, 6-2.
